In 2020, satellite images revealed the longest single lightning bolt ever recorded. According to the World Meteorological Organization, two storms set new records for lightning. One of the records was for the single bolt, captured by satellites at 477 miles (767 km) long. To give you some idea of the scope, that’s a single lightning bolt that stretched from Texas to Mississippi. That’s the distance from New York City to Columbus in Ohio.
