I compare my earnings for my first year running a gardening business compared to my second year running a gardening business. Winter is a hard time for any gardener or landscaper and I did this video to help people who are thinking about starting up to give them the reality. This is my personal experience of running my garden maintenance business

  1. You need to learn to generate more money. One of the easiest ways to do this is to sell more services to your existing clients. As they know and trust you. It's much easier than generating new clients

Gutter cleaning, if you don't have ladders for two storeys, your hedge-cutting ladders should be enough to do bungalows (Look up pro gutter tool on amazon)
    Hedge cutting
    Tree pruning
    Clearing out beds
    Power washing
    Clean greenhouses
    Garden tidy ups
    Dig over beds
    Dump runs

That's just a few jobs you can do with little to no outlay of tools. Generating those jobs starts in the Summer, plant the seed in the client's mind. Suggesting doing X job later in the year, maybe offering to do it for a little less than you would normally charge

Towards the end of the summer, you need to start proactively telling your clients about other jobs you can do for them in the colder months. People still want stuff done, you just need to remind them you do it.

A great tool that is free, is Mailchimp. (Newsletters) Chances are you will already have your client's email address, if not that's something else to work on
Don't abuse it, or you may fall foul of GDRP, but sending out the odd email with your winter services shouldn't bother your clients.

Get flyers made up with the services you offer in the winter. Towards the end of the cutting season, knock on the door – hand them a flyer, joke about working all year round and not just 6 months… Ask them to refer you to their family and friends… Not be long until your quiet times aren't so quiet. But you need to push it as the work won't come to you. After a few years, you will find a list of regular jobs that get done year after year.

  2. Always admire how transparent you are, not many people would be willing to admit their earnings so hats off to you mate. 👍

  3. Every £ is a bonus mate especially during winter months. I'm one of those that works March – December with almost no time off then I take a nice break. Although this year will be different I think. I'll be aiming to work part time over winter. This winter has been difficult to find motivation to do things and lost without some kind of routine. . . Too much sitting around haha.

  4. There is a big advantage in getting into large gardens and all day jobs as these continue all year and give a dependable income.

I started out in a similar way to you and very rapidly abandoned small and one off jobs and grass cut only work in favour of regular all day jobs most being day a fortnight all year minus a couple of visits (Christmas etc)

Something to be said for having a predictable income and a small client base equals less admin and paperwork.

  5. My Dec revenue was 507 . Mostly early December leaves and green waste removal. . My focus is studying for horticulture exams until March . We don’t really count December do we ? LOL good job saving up early in year. I’ll do the same next year. (Good allotment videos ,wish i had your fruit and veg knowledge right now. )
