I got mine built last year and had a pretty successful year. My goal this year is to hone in on what grows best and where, and try to up my production. Less variety of items but more production. And get things preserved faster so I have less waste.
That was a great video. Goals…..
One thing I suggest for goal setting is to start weighing/counting your output each year. That way you slowly start to get a better idea of what is possible in your space and time.
Thanks for the inspiring goal plan.
Thank You
We moved to a house with a huge garden area, and I went gung-ho with the whole space, deciding I didn't want to use any herbicides. It's been a disaster since the beginning. I start out great with lots of energy, using mulch and weeding every day and then about mid-summer, it gets harder to weed under some of the plants and by late summer, the garden is completely taken over by weeds again. I get overwhelmed, it goes to seed and the next year is even worse. I am ready to plant the whole thing to grass and put a flower pot on the front porch and call it good…
I have a question: I’m potentially going to be moving late spring/early summer. I am still intending on planting my gardens and if I don’t move, then business as usual. I am also planting 10 medium sized grow bags so I can still do SOMETHING and take it with me if I do move. The question is: is there anything I can or should do to plan for the unknown? I am hoping to by wooded land so I’m not sure what the growing conditions would be like. I also am trying to figure out a feasible way to do container gardens that I can also move along with the bags. Any other tips or recommendations for this unusual situation? I know I will have to start from square one once I get to the new property, but I don’t want this year to be a wash… thanks for the help!
At 2:30 , the blue sky is incredible. Reminds me of the quote from Henry David Thoreau "The bluebird carries the sky on his back." 🐦
lol , Mala giving us the cold shoulder at 9:40 . She must have sensed a critter stirring around, waiting for it to pop up out of the snow.
Haha we cleaned out 3 of our horse pens…. put it on the garden… next spring tilled it all in.. planted… lol it killed everything. Let rest another year and it did much better. 4 years later super great garden haha only have to water it once a week 🤣 definitely a learning experience!
My goal this year is to take what I learned with all my little experiments last year and focus in on a couple of main things I want to do with my garden produce: Salsa, salads, and try my hand at fermenting a few items. Focusing on that helps me not go crazy on the seeds and better plan the layout and timing of my garden (zone 8b). Really appreciate the information you share!
Wish I had set of plans and goals when I moved here 8yrs ago, planted evergreen trees that are now huge! …making my vegie garden tiny! lol………
I love you went over SMART goals. My garden goal this season is to focus on soil health. I have hard clay soil, so amending with organic matter, compost, and then all summer focus on building healthy with natural mulch and fertilizer. I realize it will take years to fix but slowly and steady doing things that help not harm soil my goal. So it's short and longer term goals.
Great video as always Gardener Scott!! I love the SMART goals., always giving such helpful ideas 💯💯💯😊thank you OG Scott
Love watching gardening videos get some ideas
This is a great video! I commend you having a 5 year goals. Very informative. Goal setting and planning are the most important aspects of gardening. Looks like Mala is having fun.
Thanks Scott! Goal this year- putting up 100 jars of tomato products. We use them almost daily, and are a huge part of our food bill. I have a load of tomato seeds, but, I'm planting with that goals in mind. Example- 20 jars of sauce, I'm going to need sauce tomatoes! I have actually started writing things down and it really has helped! MY BIG goal this year is to remember..you don't NEED to start 50 plants to get 100 jars! 😆😆I don't care how much fun it is, to grow tomatoes!
Great advice for basically all aspects of life! Thankfully I had my husband to suggest I start small otherwise I would’ve completely overwhelmed myself. Thankfully again I was blessed that my husband saw I LOVED it so much that he’s put my garden on steroids every year since😂. Great video with very sound advice, thank you!
I know that beets aren't the goal of this video, but FYI, I am not growing beets any more. Three years ago I grew beets that attracted an infestation of beet leafhoppers. They massed on my zucchini, but didn't bother it very much. But they destroyed my tomatoes. They don't particularly like tomato plants, but they do get on them and they carry a virus that kills or seriously damages tomato plants. I haven't found an organic way to deter them. I love beet leaf greens, but they are "out" until I find a solution to the beet leafhoppers. I am in Southern Utah in Zone 5 with weather a lot like Gardener Scott's and I have read that the leafhoppers are a significant problem to tomato growers in Utah. I would welcome any advice or comments.
Very good and helpful information 😊 it makes me think and narrow down what I’m trying to accomplish for a garden
such good advice as always scott. Maybe I should go rethink some of my goals hmmmmmmmm
LOVE your S.M.A.R.T. plan for setting goals! Not only will that work perfectly for gardens, but also life in general. My main goal now is for winter sowing. I already went through my seed stash and decided which ones I'm going to use. I also started preparing the containers for them. One step (small goal) at a time and I'll have everything ready by the end of next month.
Part of gardening a lot of people don't even consider. This time of year is when I concentrate on defining my goals for the coming growing season. For example, getting rid of the jumping worms. I know now I do not think I will ever get rid of them, but am learning all I can about their biology, even trying to raise them in the basement. My initial goal was to get rid of them, but now it is to get them to an acceptable threshold.
My goals for my garden were not as specific as yours, but I think without them, I would not be as far along as I am. Great Video!!!
Thanks Gardener Scott, I wish I had your space. But my garden is only 3 feet by 4 feet. Can you suggest a book or a plan to make it work for me for spring, summer and fall. I was wondering what do you do with all your produce you grow…How big is your family? Cause you have lots? Love your green house nice addition.
