Lately I’ve been working on adding a pulpwood loading yard at the southern end of the small yard at Charlottesville on my Piedmont Southern Railway layout. So today I want to share with your how I went about making that a reality.

Hi Karry My dog buddy was there at 11.01, I run HO.
Great video on logs
My dog buddy at 11:01
Good video, Larry. I have just found your channel and "my dog Buddy" at 11:00. I lived in south central Virginia for 5 years in the mid '70s. Pulpwood was a big thing in Keysville, VA with multiple truckloads coming through town on their way to the yard south of town. The yard had huge Hyster machines that could lift the entire load off the truck with their cables (much larger than the forklift conversion you have). When the load was set onto the pulpwood car, the Hyster used a large grille to push any logs, sticking out too far, inward. Was a huge yard and there were several of the Hysters working at the same time. The trucks did not have a bed (like ones in the b&w photos) to allow the cables to be able to wrap underneath the load. I helped a friend one day in the woods, and we only did one load. Even as a young man, I recall how tired I was and especially how weak my legs were. It was very hard work, especially on a hot summer day. Those guys who did it all day long had to be in great shape. Thanks for allowing me to share.
Thanks for the info. Very cool. I had a cat named buddy. It was said at 11:01
My dog buddy was used on 11:00. I love your step by step videos.
II:00 /23:03 That is a real interesting siding industry for an empty long stretch of real estate.
My dog Buddy @23:03
Pretty cool – I was thinking about a simiar for my railroad.
Larry, Another interesting video. There is a paper mill on the line I model that has a chipping operation onsite and receives a lot of pulp logs. They unload with a crane not unlike the one you show in the last historic photo. Google Earth shows the crane unloading in a 2016 satellite image. Not sure where the logs come from but they come from somewhere even in 2022. By the way my dog Buddy thought it was great that you mentioned him at 11:01. He is a min pin and he was wondering what kind of dog your Buddy is?
My dog Buddy 11:00
Hi Larry. Great video again as usual. "my dog Buddy" comes up at 11:00. Looking forward to the next video…
In thinking of my layout, i want a lumber yard, by a pulp yard would be a good alternative. My dog buddy would think so!!(11:01)
My dog buddy. 1:03
My dog Buddy @ 11:01 … Nice addition to the layout, History around rail operations can be really interesting for those of us are coming late to the hobby … Oops, everyone's comments are visible … Did UTube not let U hide comments ?
My dog Buddy at 11:01
Funny thing is I looked through the comments and found the answer, "My dog Buddy." So, what happened that the comments were not blocked? It was a dead give away.
Really enjoyed the prototype photos AND the near seamless inclusion of "my dog Buddy" at 11:01!

Hi Larry Zakery Dartt here again
I love making my own loads out of wood for my flatcars. But I have another question. It about the walthers Locomotive that I made mention to you recently with the sound decoder problems. I have taken it to my local hobby shop. They are unsure of what is the problem with it. And to have them replace the sound decoder is around $125. But my question for you is I have seen on some of your videos where subscriber's have sent you a locomotive or something like that for you to look at or possibly fix for them. If I'm wrong please let me know. But if so what would I need to do to send my locomotive to you to look over and possibly figure out the problem.
Thank You
ZD
Great job! Having worked in the mountains and cutting and storing large piles of wood, I recommend putting something resembling a couple of t-posts at the ends of your to-be-loaded lumber piles. In reality the piles never end that cleanly unless they're butted up against something. I love your scene! Where's Buddy? I don't see him resting on the porch.
My dog buddy at 11:00 – I like this scene very much and may include a track in a switching layout I’m working on – thanks for the idea and information!
Really liking the look of your Pulp yard 🙂 Making me think of ways to adapt some photos to work on my layout. 'My Dog Buddy' was heard at 11:00 –11:01 and I'm sure he'd loved to sit on that porch overlooking the yard and watching trains go by 🙂
Interesting video. I've often wondered how such operations worked. My dog Buddy at 11:00-11-01, would probably love the yard office porch.
My dog Buddy at 11:01.
Another great video!!! Love to see this sort of stuff on scenes and scenery. My dog Buddy likes it too at 11:00
My dog Buddy at 11:00
I see trucks carrying wood chips all the time but I never knew where they were coming from or going. I'm glad I caught the video. Also I think it's pretty cool how the office magically appeared. Lol My dog buddy keyword was at 11:00–11:01.
Another informative video Larry – and glad to hear my dog Buddy was mentioned at 11:01 into the video. Quick question – were those 40' bulkhead flatcars in the video from Tichy that you painted and lettered?
I really learn a new thing about Pulpyards today and how they worked back on the day and the equipment they use to load up the Pulpwood into the Pulpracks thank you for this great info and visual details My dog buddy was heard at 11:00 –11:01
1101
Yep… 11:00 "My Dog Buddy".
My dog Buddy at 1101: Aren't your logs a bit too uniform? It seems there was a wide variance in the length of the logs in the photographs.
You used my dog's name. But anyway my dog buddy was said at 11:02 into the video. Thanks for all you do and keep up the good work. Jeff
Cant find my dog buddy at all after watching twice except a mention at around 11.01. Love all your video's by the way and thanks for your help in the past
I heard ' My dog Buddy ' at 11:01
Hey love the videos my dog buddy came up at 11.00
My dog Buddy @ 11:00. Well done – simple little industry that can be included in a fairly small space.
my dog buddy 1102 great video
My dog buddy at 11:17.
I might be too late to enter but
"My dog Buddy" told me at 11:01 to submit a comment anyway. Ya never know. Thanks Larry
What a great video! It is an excellent "industry" that will fit into a small space. Thanks for another
great idea. PS: Did you get the shot glass with the dimple on the bottom?
