Fresh vegetables from the garden in the middle of January? Sound too good to be true?
We’ve had snow and single-digit temperatures, but I’m still harvesting some crops without a greenhouse, row cover, or even hoop house! If that’s not something to get excited about, I don’t know what it is.
Come see what it is and how we do it watching the video (or visiting the blog post) on how to learn everything I’m doing in the garden in January, and make sure you catch our other gardening-by-month posts.

Title kind of misleading but a good video about Brussels sprouts and carrots
Good morning Melissa. The garden looks lovely. Thanks for sharing your tips on growing fresh vegetables without a greenhouse in January. And of course Happy New Year!! 🌻😁
Hey Melissa, I have carrots also 😃
Maybe with straw/wood chips it would be better but here, in Maine, there's no way I could get a spade or anything expect maybe a backhoe bucket in the ground.
I've never done it… but I have heard of gardners topping their brussel stalks to get the sprouts larger. Apparently it sends the energy to the sprouts instead of developing more leaves at the top? Never seen it done but I've seen it suggested in comments.
Moles don't eat veggies, voles however do.
Nice
Melissa, moles feed on worms etc, they are carnivores and will not harms your veggies or roots. Voles and mice are the evil-doers who harm your crops. Also, the earth from molehills is very clean (neither seeds nor insects) and excellent to put into pots for planting.
PNW here too, and our garden is under at least a foot of snow capped with ice. Along with everything else. Not getting anything out of that right now. We likely would need some sort of hoop house to just keep some of the snow off and fleece for those polar vortex moments. So while this is working for you, does it actually work for everyone?
Good to see fresh vegetables made it through the cold, snowing and blowing weather.
How nice to have home grown carrots and Brussels sprouts in January!!!
I love brussel sprouts, Thanks for sharing !
Melissa, I just found your channel recently and am so thrilled at all I'm learning from the info you share.
I'm older than you and suffered medical issues all my life which no doctor could/ wanted to help me with. It really came to a head in the late 90s and rendered me sterile for quite awhile. Through a changed diet and much prayer, the Lord finally blessed my husband and me with children.
The diet I went on though was pretty severe and very difficult to maintain as the years went by and the kids grew. I am loving the ideas you present as wholesome, wise and above all ACCESSIBLE!
Thank you for the work you do, the life you lead, and sharing part of it with us. God bless and keep you.
Awesome. I never knew Winter crops were possible. I live in Washington State
The links do not have the varieties of Brussels Sprouts as promised. Thank you for all the great tips you provide.
I'm in northern Michigan. I discovered a week or so ago that my brussells sprout survived our winter so far. I just didn't get to them this fall as far as cleaning out the garden. Had no idea that they could last through sub freezing temps!!! Had them for dinner. Mine were also a little smaller though. Maybe the same variety as yours???
I'm so darn ready to start my seeds! Thankfully, I've got beets, beans, chard, and some tomatoes in my grow tent to munch on over the winter and the garlic is up…if I can keep my hens from digging it up!
The day's are getting longer!!! Come on Spring.
Nice!
Unless your property is under 4 feet of snow…
I'm in Colorado, Clay soil, can't even get to My garden. The soil just packs like cement if I Walk on it. Great video.
I plant my "winter' carrots in September, they are great for soup, stew and such. I do like you, leave in ground and will dig a bunch up as needed until I run out. I do use a big shovel, can dig from side without damaging anything.
