  1. Yes you can cover it then do a no dig method card board Leaves, mulch, compost layers and should be ready to plant by summer but honestly you wouldn’t use the plastic at all just cardboard as first layer I created a new bed this way and it’s wonderful. Also I am not a expert on compost but I believe you have to turn it. Every couple weeks turn with a shovel and you should start to get it.

  2. Lovely to see you back at the allotment, Emma. You're a breath of fresh air. I'm looking forward to following your year ahead.

  3. Hiya Emma Thankyou for visit your looking well and ready lol you’ve got this! Blessings luv Ontario Canada 🐝🇨🇦

  4. Hi Emma looking forward to 2023 vlogs. The area you are going to membrane and wood chip dont dig it it will be fine, you could put some large pots on it to grow some stuff in aswell xxx

  5. This is the earliest 'false' spring we've had in years. I think the daffodils and tulips I've seen popping up will die before they get to bloom. I hope not. Just don't be fooled by this westher we've been having

  6. I know this is going to sound really odd….I see in the winter you wear leggings & ankle wellingtons. Are your leggings thermal or waterproof? I’m on the hunt for some at the moment

  7. Just use cardboard and woodchip. Also horse poop needs to be well rotted, 6-12mths. We collect ours and have pile into a darlek compost bin to rot down then every now n then add some to the compost bin to accelerate it

  8. Hi Emma happy new year to you too look forward to gardening together again this year, we’re always learning. Like you I’m just into my second year so hoping for more success this year thanks for vlogs I always love watching you 🥳

  9. Hi Emma, I always love finding a new garden or allotment channel worth subscribing to, and this one is a delight.

It's inconceivable but apparently true that you have not discovered Charles Dowding yet! The King Charles of No Dig Gardening and Compost Making.
He now has hundreds of fantastic, informative videos for you to binge watch and fill the dark night hours as spring approaches.
He also does teaching tours of his market garden, public talks, online courses, and has written many books.

  10. 'Let's just do it! … No, you can't just do it.' 🤣 – made me chuckle on this dark & rainy morning.

I would lay cardboard all along that border (straight on top of the grass & weeds), then the weed suppressing fabric (altho I personally don't like the stuff and would prob just use cardboard), then the woodchip – just like you would for woodchip paths. Best of luck.

  11. Love your videos! You've inspired me to start my own allotment vlogs, keep up the great work. Best of luck for 2023 x

  12. Hi Emma I think you successfully grew loads last year look at tomatoes squash Brussels coliflowers and flowers you done loads I think but it will be more this year🙋🏻👍

  13. Manure takes about a year to break down so it may be a bit strong for growing in Praps it will be ok by the time you get squash plants in

  14. If you are no dig there is no need for crop rotation. But if you have a disease like allium leaf minor or rust on leeks

  15. Just cardboard it and then woodchip it and compost too if you want. Why woodchip are you not growing in it? If you want to grow in it cardboard and compost👍🙋🏻

  16. I wouldn’t use plastic always use cardboard as it will degrade plastic won’t so it will feed the ground partly. You don’t need to dig at all unless it’s big roots of bushes and briars. But if you cut them to the ground and cover with cardboard and compost or leaf mould then in Tim it will rot. But if you do put on black plastic never cover with woodchip or compost as it well get untwines over years in the soil and it doesn’t do the ground any good. Cardboard does the same job even newspaper and feeds the ground a bit. Anyway that’s my advice

  17. Hi Emma happy new year to you and your family x nice to see you on your plot sorry IV not comment much mental health and all that crap I find you very entertaining please don't ever change lol I think what ever you put down as long as it blocks sunlight things carnt grow you will always get the bits round the sides but it will look better.and with you forgetting wot you plant try bit of A4 drew a picture of Ur beds in pencil and what you planted then if you forget just look and if you change it rub out good luck xx

  18. Thinking you could lay down old newspaper on top of the grass/weeds before the black fleece layer and woodchips aswell.. don't think it would hurt at least

  19. Some advice for your new compost – you'll find the Sylvagrow has a much finer texture than other peat free brands so I would keep that for your seed sowing and potting on young plants – maybe even consider adding 10% perlite or potting grit for better drainage if you can. The Westland stuff would be better saved for bigger jobs like filling containers. The Bloomin Amazing stuff is nor really multi-purpose compost, it's more of a soil improver so good for mulching your beds to improve fertility and soil structure.

  20. covering with just weed membrane may not work i did that over my front lawn and then covered with a ton of pebbles and stuff still grew thru it im hoping after the winter it may have died off a wee bit more as id like to add some raised beds for a few veg n flowers ,,time will tell lol

  21. No… weeds are too strong… at least mine came through the weed membrane. And I actually cover it with sand. Now I try my best to pull it out.

  22. Happy New Year! Check out Charles Dowding for great advice on no dig and composting. The sprouts look great! Now is a great time to pull weeds, with the soil moist and soft. Sean Cameron has some great videos for seed starting in January if you have a small greenhouse. Great time of year to make plans and brainstorm improvements and changes. Enjoy your attitude towards gardening. The best medicine by far! 👍🏻🇨🇦
