  1. I got chickens this year. Went from 8 hens to 20 + a rooster in a matter of a few months ๐Ÿ˜… its an addiction.

  2. I love my chickens. They are great pets with individual personalities. I started out with 8 and have decided I like having 5 instead. The only thing Iโ€™d add to this information is to read all the information on a variety you want to get before actually getting the chicks. You might change your mind and choose a different breed. Each breed has different traits for longevity, size of eggs, temperaments , etc.

  3. You've mentioned before that Bev is the only one with a name! May I suggest the following for the others:
    Copper (with the copper head)
Blackie (one of the black ones)
    & Princess Gertrude the 4th

    ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. The only thing you didn't cover that I'm curious about is what you do with the chicken manure? It has so many nutrients, do you use it on any of your gardens?

  5. Beverly is my name too and I've been following how my avian friend has been doing right from the beginning. These are about the most fortunate chickens ever! We had chickens at one time but the city moved to us so the chickens had to move on as our new backdoor neighbor was sure she'd get a disease. We also "got" to hear her very vibrato soprano singing by the hours on end. ๐Ÿ™„

  6. Chicken Guard has an excellent warranty and customer service. They can help you troubleshoot over the phone. Mine malfunctioned last summer. And the string that pulls the door was off its track. I disassembled the string pulley part of the motor and straightened it out and it worked great again. Also having it properly calibrated is important. And donโ€™t let the batteries die if itโ€™s for protection! We learned the hard way last fallโ€ฆ
Also-I still recommend the Fly Fiesta vs mealworms from TSC. 75% more calcium than mealworms in the black soldier fly larvae! They look just the same and trust me theyโ€™ll love them!

  7. My nephew's class at school ,when he was maybe 9 years old, years ago, had a project where they had eggs and then chickens and the teacher gave each kid their chick..so my nephew brought his home and his friends Mom wouldn't let his friend keep his so they ended up with 2 chicks..after awhile the legs on the chicks started to turn out and got weak…his Mom's friend put them in a box with a heat lamp and they healed..we thought it was the cold that did it to them..they were given to a farmer later for laying eggs.

  8. I made a suet container out if hardware cloth and one morning it was literally pulled apart and the suet gone..people told me it was probably a raccoon who did it,so be aware of it.and your curtains are so cute.

  9. Love My Chickens ( and ducks even though they are Super Messy). Started with a few 5-6 and now have 3 coops and pens. One for Big Chickens, one for Bantams ( got by accident and Iโ€™m now Hooked! Samantha and Benjamin would
    Love them! )
Great tips especially the hardware cloth and ventilation. Thanks as always for sharing

  10. Like the previous commenter, I too sat through a video on keeping chickens, which I will never do. I am glad I did though because at the very end, Laura showed a bag of oyster shells. I have been collecting egg shells to kill the potential plague of slugs I am anticipating in my garden. I know you donโ€™t deal with slugs, but do you think oyster shells would work? It would be much easier to just go buy a bag. I have all my friends and family saving shells for me. The idea is the slugs crawl over the shells and donโ€™t survive. I know I could also buy a slug preventer/ killer but I am looking for the most effective but cheapest option.

  11. Original Flock: was it Avian Flu? We are your neighbors, up north in British Columbia… have had our share of Avian flu over the years here! What a great homestead for your kids to grow up in… lots of opportunity for chores – and through that, learning about their world, chickens, gardens, and homestead maintenance!

  12. Thank you! Extremely informative.
I have wanted to ask you so many questions about your coop but never found the right time or topic to ask. Thank you again, as you covered every single question I had.

  13. I know what happened to your chickens. I was watching Dr T, a veterinarian show, and the same thing happened to one of her patients. The lady said her chicken couldn't stand. The Doc kept the bird over night but finally died. The diagnosis after an autopsy was a virus that attacks the nervous system of the bird. There was nothing you could have done about it. It's just one of those things, it is totally incurable. Don't feel bad Laura, there was nothing you could have done to prevent it.

  14. Do you have a box of ash that they can roll in and dust themselves off in to prevent mites?

  15. You could actually put a shade cloth over that one section of there run (on the roof) that gets a lot of sun in the summer to keep them shaded. That way you don't have to worry about bringing anything into there run that is unfamiliar and that you don't have to clean around.

  16. Every shed I've ever owned had a lock of some sort on the outside. Where else would it be! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ Noone lives on the inside. So funny.

  17. This is great, thank you so much! We will be adding a coop soon and this is really helpful! ๐Ÿ“ ๐Ÿฅš ๐Ÿ˜

  18. You likely get eggs that are delicious extra nutritious for your children and you both and even with the cost of feed and electricity considered, are less expensive. Eggs here in NW Arizona this week were $6.99 per dozen for large eggs at Safeway (owned by Albertsons and same as Vons).

  19. Old chicken keeper here. I purchased two wooden plant stands with wheels at Home Depot for the feeder and waterer, keeping them further off the ground and cleaner. I also use fine pine shavings or rice hulls as bedding. You could convert your waterer to the nipple type, almost eliminating dirty water. You can make a feeder from a piece of pvc pipe, attached to the wall with a 60 degree elbow on the bottom and cap on top. Pour feed into pipe, again eliminating debris in feed. Either way, your setup is great. Pretty spoiled girls.

  20. If youโ€™re concerned about your chickens having cold feet, you can provide a 2×4, wide side facing up, as a roost. Since they donโ€™t have to hang on, they can snuggle down and let their feathers keep their feet warm. ๐Ÿ˜

  21. I donโ€™t intend to keep chickens but enjoyed this video anyway ๐Ÿ™‚ Just curious, do your 3 other chickens have names? Or just Bev?

  22. Sadly it sounds like the 9 chickens contracted Marek's Disease. One may have had it and passed it to the others. It's horrible. I got my babies vaccinated against that. If you get more chickens (I know you have 4), check Meyer Hatchery. Not only can they be vaccinated (most hatcheries offer it), but you can get vent-sexed babies. The day-olds are very easy, but only use a radiant heat brooder NOT one of those red bulb heat lamps. I started with 6 Silkies, but 4 turned out to be roosters. I then got 4 babies, but this time from Meyer Hatchery and they were 1 Silkie, 1 Green Queen, 1 Mottled Cochin, and 1 Steel Egger – all bantams. Bantams lay 3/4 sized eggs. They are so sweet! I love your videos! Thanks for the tour. I'm currently working on building Coop & Run 2.0 because I moved to the Boise area (Meridian). I'll have to come visit your Mom's Nursery!

  23. Laura – how many eggs do you get a day? I heard that chickens produce less in the winter & pick up production in the spring due to more daylight?

  24. Loving your chicken coop.๐Ÿ’•
Have you considered raising Quail birds.??

  25. Aloha from us Kwarts!๐Ÿค™๐Ÿฝ Your videos are definitely how my daughter and I start our day. She loves watching your kids in the videos especially and thinks Samantha is too stinkn cute. Here in Hawaii, the islands are covered with feral chickens. It's definitely a love-hate relationship. They serve a great purpose keeping the centipedes outa homes (should look at how massive the centipedes are here!) But they tear up the landscape quick and constantly have to be chased off. And if they decide to lay in your pots or shelves, etc, it doesn't matter how much you chase em off! They are literally the most stubborn creatures. They will sneak to kick your plants out of pots and lay. I have full commercial gym setup in garage, and every day, one flies in to lay on cabinets. I've gone to put equipment away only to have eggs drop down on me. ๐Ÿ˜‘ If anyone is curious, we do use the free-range eggs. Even feed them to our dogs.

  26. I used the deep bedding method with hemp shavings. Hemp is very absorbent. I leave in for a long time doesn't smell at all. I'm having a hard time finding more of it in Oregon.

  27. For digging predators, put hardware cloth on the outside. About a foot or so out from run. Digging predators dig near run. They are not smart enough to go back a foot or more to dig. Check out Carolina Coop videos.

  28. Iโ€™ve been wanting you to do a video just like this one thank you so much for taking the time to share and explain everything well.
