  1. I live in MD zone 7 and my hakonechloa is brown, yours is still bright green! I was hoping this would be an evergreen grass.

  2. Holy Moly! 😳 Over an hour of helpful “gardening through the seasons” tips from @Horttube! I’m sure I will be watching this one again!

  3. 7 b GA here. I'm excited to work on my backyard in January and prepare for spring. Thank ypu!

  4. So to be clear, in 7b, I can prune my hollies, cherry laurel and boxwoods now?

  5. It's been so warm up here in Indiana, all those potted young perrenials I didn't get in the ground fast enough in fall are trying to come to life already! I am doing some soil and bed work outside though. I may lose some flowers, but I do like to get outside if the ground is warm up here. That's rare. remember, PATIENCE, and don't over water. Every plant I've killed is because of too much water.

  6. I just ordered my caladiums for early delivery, I like to get them started in the house. ❄️💚🙃 zone 6a

  7. I took pictures of my winter “ garden” so I could start planning my strategy for this coming spring. ❄️💚🙃

  8. Thank you Jim, this was a great overview in a very appropriate time. I'd like to bring up a subject I have been researching and that is adding humus to my lawn and gardens since I live in an area with very poor, mostly sandy soil (Gulf coast, zone 8b). I follow a soil scientist's YouTube channel who gets more into the science end of soils and he just produced a video based on a study published in Nature, a well-respected science journal in December 2015 titled, "The Contentious Nature of Soil Organic Matter” by Johannes Lehmann & Markus Kleber. They say that humus can not be characterized in soil. That means that scientists can not analyze humus while it is in soil. They could only work with it after extraction at pH 13. He says, "humus does not exist in the soil. Humus is created during the pH 13 extraction process. The strong alkali creates humus."

It takes that high alkaline extraction to pull the organic component out of soil it can be studied. The treatment with the alkali produces two main components which are called humic acid and fulvic acid.

The reason I've been interested in researching this is that there are some YouTube channels that have been heavily promoting adding humic acid, fulvic acid and biochar to your soils and promoting it as almost miracle to enrich soils. According to this soil scientist and the paper he is quoting, "the term humic substance is used as a catch all for a number of products including humic acid and fulvic acid". As far as adding any value in soils he says, "the scientific evidence supporting a real value in the garden is weak at best." This soil scientist agrees with you about the value of adding organic material to soil instead.

I found it a very interesting article and would love to hear your take on this topic and I think there is a lot of your followers who have run across these ads.

  9. Great video for experienced gardeners as well as beginners. Very helpful to develop a "game plan" for the year even though it may not be possible to follow it exactly (as in the rest of life). I am in Zone 6b, so colder winters and cooler summers than yours, but my LFD is April 18 so, with some adjustments, I can follow your general schedule. A mistake I made last year was planting seeds indoors too early, resulting in some leggy seedlings. So, people, you don't necessarily want to do the 8 weeks if the seed packet says 6-8 weeks. May be better for the seedlings to be smaller because, if the temperatures outside are right, the seedlings will really take off once they are in the ground. This will be my third year gardening on my new property — it takes more than one season to understand the conditions on a piece of land, but experimenting is part of the fun. Your videos have certainly helped me to be a better gardener and introduced me to so many interesting plants (and plant people).

  10. Hooray finally signed up my membership. Your channel has been informative & helpful. You've given me such great ideas & learning tremendously. Keep up the good work 👏

  11. Hello, gardeners friends and Mr Jim putnam and Stephany you guys are truly the moderation the Gardening circle. Thank you so much. Love ❤️

  12. This was a great video containing so much useful and need information; will definitely be saving this to reference throughout the growing season. Thanks for this Jim!

  13. Is that chef's choice by the shed? Looks awesome! Mine turned brown during the last cold snap. So did fragrant sweet olives and copper top viburnums. They dropped all the leaves.
Thanks for this video. Really informative❤

  14. Hi Jim. Long overdue but I signed up for YouTube today to specifically subscribe to your channel(s). Your videos are fantastic and a wealth of information. Thanks for taking the time to put together this full year walk through. Happy New Year!

  15. Can I use wood chips from an oka tree stump that's been grounded as mulch in my flower bed full of tulip bulbs?

  16. I’ve always been a lover of gardening. A year ago I moved from zone 6 to zone 8. I can learn to adapt, except I cannot find help. Companies want to prune whenever and however. If you want lawn mowed they want to do it all…including trimming. I’m a widow now and need help. Please advise how to find knowledgeable people. I’d like help with mowing, edging (love a nice edging), cleaning debris, removing leaves, etc. How can I find someone?

  17. Wow, will watch second time to take notes! You mentioned not planting elephant ears or cannas until after last frost date. I have some at my previous house I need to transplant to new house (20 minutes away). I planned to transplant them in February when I am transplanting dormant shrubs. Should I wait until last frost to transplant those? I am zone 8a, Brunswick County NC.

  18. Jim this was so informative. Thank you sharing your knowledge. I've learned so much from you and Stacey over the two years that I've been watching. I appreciate your hard work.

  19. I learned how to change the spark plug and change the oil on the lawn mower. Saved me money. Thank you YouTube!

  20. My aphids were decimated in less than a week by hoverflies. Aphids were so thick on the stalks that the stalks looked orange from a distance. They sought out the aphids and laid eggs around them. Larvae hatched and before the next weekend 1000's of aphids gone. I'm keeping the milkweed more for the hoverflies than I am for monarchs haha

  21. This is a great video! I’m working on my garden plan and researching plants. Is there a full sun small plant that can take an occasional hit by a basketball? I have a Nandina there, so something to go with it. My kids are very active outside and keep killing my flowers.

  22. Boy I think you covered it all and makes want to get to work in yard NOW!!!! Thanks Jim again for such balanced info!!!

  23. What an excellent video! It’s wonderful to hear how you garden during each season and plant all 12 months 😊 Thanks much Jim for sharing the info!!

  24. Take a video about this , The world is now ruled by one community of people, the world Satanic elite, you can also call them the committee to meet the Antichrist and prevent the 2nd coming of Jesus, Trump called them the deep state, at the moment it consists of about 10,000 people, the main ones there are Rockefellers, Rothschilds, Windsors, Baruchs, they, their ancestors, descendants and other people who enter there have the mark of Lucifer, which, if they bring the antichrist and do not allow the 2nd coming, they will receive eternal life after the x hour, and the rest of humanity, for all the time that they have lived, they won't get anything, They won't stop themselves

  25. I have cut down several hedges and prune many hydrangeas and roses, etc. What I have noticed is that anything that was pruned in warm weather had borer damage. I would rather skip out on getting blooms than take a chance of borers killing my trees or shrubs. When pruning, look out for that hole on top of the stem that shows borers have moved in. If you must prune in warm weather, use a pruning sealer.

  26. Hi Jim & Stephany,
Hope ya'all had a fun New Years–Holly & Griffin, too!
Sooooo much great info in this video. My only wish is that it could have been divided into Parts 1-4–one for each season–for ease of watching.
    Thank you! 😊

  27. So we going to see a video of you building your patio and or the fence you have been yaking about for awhile. This February 😁🤦‍♂️😂

  28. Yearly task: I like to save all the products from the year;pots, fencing, wood, etc.., everything, and then see if I can create something with it like sculpture or use it in unexpected way. Also make neighbors aware of free stuff.

  29. Great information as usual, and lots of it, thank you. Have you ever done a video discussing the "Chelsea Chop?" I know you briefly mentioned it in terms of reducing the height and increasing the fullness of perennials in early summer, but with so many different kinds of perennials, I would imagine that there might be some variation in what to do when, and maybe which perennials not to use it on. I tried to search your channel for that, but didn't find anything specific. Thanks again for all the great gardening info.
