Farms come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s no wonder that some of them can produce a massive number of fish. Ozark farm is one of these impressive farms. Their secret? Fish! For the last two decades, Ozark farm has been raising over a million fish per year, making them one of the biggest fish farms in the country. But how have they managed it? And how have they been so successful over the years? To know how this farm raises fish that ends up in our fish bowls, stick around.
Kathie Wilson, the manager of Ozark Fisheries, remembers getting goldfish from the fair when she was a young girl. She would feed them and clean their bowl, but she never considered fish to be pets. She knew nothing about them.
Six years ago, everything changed. The Morgan County native made a career move and began working on a farm not far from where she grew up. Years ago, her father had done some building work there.
From above, the landscape looks like a grid, much like the landscapes of neighboring farms in Indiana: Patchwork of sharp corners and straight lines. Nevertheless, these locations cannot be classified as “fields” in the conventional sense. Instead, this is a farm that uses ponds to grow its crop — the very fish that Wilson won as a little girl.
Ozark Fisheries has been in business for almost a century, providing decorative fish to pet stores, carnivals, and water gardens. It’s one of the country’s oldest private fish farms, breeding millions of fish each year in hundreds of tiny ponds near Martinsville, a town of roughly 12,000 people between Indianapolis and Bloomington on the White River.
