I have always called my garden my happy place. It's where I go when I need to de-stress. Spend a half hour in my garden and alllllllll my worries melt away.
I just got back into vegetable gardening & preserving food last year after 40 years of not doing it but I had planted & cared for large flower gardens all the years between. The smell of dirt makes me happy. Unless I’m cleaning out rough stuff, I do not wear gloves bc the benefits of our hands in bare dirt is high. Even on rough years when the Bermuda grass almost won, I was thankful to have my garden retreats. Now the vegetable gardens hit the happy spot even more because I am feeding my family from them—except aphids, bunnies eating bean plans, deer eating okra! I have plans to win this year!! 👏🏻👏🏻
This has been my experience surviving with ptsd, gardening has been an awesome coping skill, with smells, Sun and getting my hands in the dirt🌞✨🪐💫🌜💓💪 thank you for bringing light to this with that article 💓🌱
This is the truth! Gardening is the most relaxing and rewarding hobby for me. During the end of January when I find myself depressed over winter I jump in the car and head to my favorite garden center. Strolling through the plants, looking at seed racks and smelling the dirt makes me feel 100 percent better! New to gardening ? Then go buy some house plants and start practicing! Much love to you Jill!
Good morning Jill… This is what I love about you. Never know what the next video is going to be about, always something new and interesting… btw: thank you sooo much for the heads-up regarding the spam link replying to our comments… I didn't think it was from you, you normally let us know beforehand if something is coming from you…
Mental health is a bigger issue now than it has ever been I think. People who have never had a problem are folding under stress. I think it is a combination of intense spiritual attack and the horrible state of our current society. Getting outside and helping things grow puts you back in touch with reality and what is truly important. And it helps keep you active and moving. Plus it encourages you to eat healthier if you are growing food. But even if you are just growing ornamental stuff the fresh air, sunshine, and contact with God's dirt are really good for you. We need the peace.
Please keep a watch on weather at weatherman plus, mark. Blessings to you all, with all the hard work you have done. We are so blessed by your attitude & joy in your presentation. What seeds do you use.
There is a lot of common sense in the study conclusions. One–being outdoors in the sunshine promotes vitamin D in our bodies which can be stored, to some extent, for winter. 2–the food gardening produces is fresher and better for our health. 3–Simple contact with soil has been shown to be beneficial to our well being. 4–the ability to contribute food to our family tables alleviates stress from the fear of food scarcity. 5–being able to produce food cuts our food bills helping our budgets. 5–learning to preserve our harvests gives us optimism for the future. These are not all the benefits, but the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Oh, as well, getting to know other gardeners introduces us to a wonderful group of people.
I enjoyed the Canning Video , Thank you – I read a similar info and still trying to absorb it. I read a similar on doing Crafts like Crochet and Knitting . I must say being active helps and doing something that motivates you is the Answer. regarding gardening , it gives me pleasure to see what I plant grow and also the food I get Ninette Bird- Caribbean Wife.
Going out and just being near my plants and dirt definitely helps dissipate the blues. It helps me forget worries for a while, and reminds me that God is in charge and the provider of abundance.
Hi Jill this is very interesting. I'm a licensed therapist for veterans. Mike is an Army Vet Green Beret and he's never had any PTSD or stress. We've been gardening for years and I will check this out. Thanks for the video. Blessings, Rochelle
Nice little addition to the video collection, Mrs. Jill!!!! Very nice. Your own fruits and vegetables– not just for a healthy body but keeping your mind off the negative in life. Well, except for Siberian Blasts…that was tough. But look at all the people bouncing back…yahooooo!! I am going to try to set up a place on my back porch that I can have enclosed in order to heat (small space) for starting my seeds. Big amen on the smell of dirt. Appreciate your input (and from others) into our lives. Hope other folks come on board. Have a great weekend and don't work too hard—Ha Ha! Jesus bless.
Love EPOCH Times…I believe not just gardening but the belief in our Good Lord above if we focus on him and our faith we can beat depression and anxiety. I love the smell of dirt. Just planted a base of celery from our stalks to grow. It has already sprouted and is about 3 inches tall. The start of my planting. Our forecast seems that Jan and Feb are going to be pretty mild, so we have to pray for rain. But a great time for us Central Texans to start our gardens. Thank you for sharing all you do!!
This weather is definitely weird these days. I'm gonna start my tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage and other things this weekend but instead of indoors I'll be doing it outdoors. As far as less depression with gardening, I think a lot of that has to do with the nutritional value of home grown food. There are also microbes in soil that when breathed in, they trigger brain responses of peace and calm almost like melatonin. I think it's also the reward and accomplishment.
Yea we don't have time to worry about disease , to busy working overtime gardening , You have to work in the heat then cold , who has time to come down with anything .
There is just something about getting your hands in the dirt, getting sweaty, planting seeds, watching your plants emerge from ground and then finally getting to harvest the produce from your labors! It is so rewarding! 😊
I feel it has to do with what is called “grounding” the energy the earth gives out. I sleep on a grounding mat for years. It has made my psoriasis less inflamed.
Thank you for clarifying the hillbilly jilly spam. I got that notification and was leery, but I didn't want you to think I was ungrateful so I sent a text message from my phone. When I didn't get a reply right away, I knew it was junk. I deleted it from my phone, but it's been blowing up with spam calls every since. I feel so stupid now. Let's pray for mean people who do things like that. They need to garden so they feel better 😉
Hi Jill!! Love gardening!! I have 15 jars done today!!! This sb interesting. I have to find space to store!! I feel better when I can get out and work in the yard. Great study. When our community garden, Shiloh, ramps up again, I'll be out there again!! Thanks for your great videos and advice!! God bless!!! Much love!! Did you know that our community garden is the largest in the United States!! Does making home remedies also count, like cough syrup?
Janet Lambe in her book, Why the Cat Purrs, says that gardeners are the happiest of people because dirt contains microbes that release serotonin which creates happiness when it is inhaled. Studies have proven this true! That explains why I’m happy!
I wouldn't have made it through the last copy years without starting my own seeds and growing a garden. It helped my mental health, physical health and we got to eat it or can it! Win win!
Funny you should mention chronic illness. I was diagnosed with Lupus at age 19. They put me on a pill, then another pill, then another pill. I got to a point where I said I feel worse with your pills than without and threw them all away. Haven't looked back in over 15 years and while I am not 100%, I believe spending time in nature is a big factor in me being healthier, both mentally and physically, than others with the same diagnosis.
I've bored more than one non-gardener with my gardening pictures and produce. I just love it – my garden is certainly my happy place. I love all the different colors and textures and wonderful smells – and that's just the vegetables! The flowers in and among the veggies are fabulous and the herbs just top everything off. The taste of home-grown veggies is out of this world. Blessings!

I get depressed when I am unable to garden. And I love having a full pantry without going to the store so often.

Was gardening.

Gardeners get grounded with working in the soil and nature no doubt.
Lemon balm, chamomile grown and dried for tea is excellent for anxiety and depression.
Sending a hug from Canada and our balmy -17 day.
May God bless you and your loved ones and shine his light on you always.
🙌🤲🙏💕🇨🇦
There is just something about sitting in the middle of the garden watching the plants grow.
Some things that help with my stress, gardening, creating art, worship, being with my family, and playing with my Aussie ❤(not in any specific order😊)
I love you and Greg. you guys are great.

Hey Jill this is real interesting. No wonder I really never stress. Just go and to the garden and pull weeds. 🍅 God bless, Mike
Yep Jill!…happy people are indestructible….fun, laughter, love…control your mindset….happiness is your strongest weapon
Report them Jill.

It helps us with the cost of groceries and love to garden and share my produce I get out of the garden it makes me feel good .

We'll see… it's still early in Jan, yet.
It's not gardening it's GROUNDING/earthing. Look it up
What is the material used to cover the greenhouse? Great information for those of us don't do well in cloudy weather
We do know how important touching the earth/soil was to our beloved native Americans
Not surprised, gardens are the best.
I feel it has to do with what is called “grounding” the energy the earth gives out. I sleep on a grounding mat for years. It has made my psoriasis less inflamed.
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH you said it. January is going to be mild. we will know who to blame! lol

Very sad day. I think keeping busy is always good. You are sure one busy lil girl!
I have to agree that gardening and being outside is a relaxation tool. I love to spend time in my gardens weeding and talking to the plants.
Anxiety? What's that? Lol
