Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. This was a prophetic video considering 2020 and 2021 corona situation but scientists have been saying for years pandemics are not a matter of if but when

  2. I am begining to beleive that living to survive is the only way humans where meant to live…. all this progress just ruins our humanity and the earth..

  3. Prophetic. The line around the block at our local feed store, for baby chicks, was insane during the beginning of the corona mess.

  4. I'm on pension now and with covid raising prices of food I have started a veggy garden. I am digging up the lawn at the back (exercise) and so far started 3 trees (fig, lemon and mulberry) from clippings. I have planted some marigolds to ward off pests and planted a small amount of veggies. By next year I hope to supply 30 percent of my veggies from my garden.

  5. Grow shell beans and add in a ham once a month and you’re good to go! As a kid, we lived on eggs, chickens, oatmeal & grits for breakfast, beans & rice seasoned with ham and the occasional vegetable “boiled dinner”/ham. Occasional ground meat with spaghetti & red sauce. And lucky at times to have that…..
So, tho I’m in my 70’s & crippled up with bad knees, I’m working on a container veggie garden for 2022. I’m in a Gulf South climate in the US and you can garden here except in the hottest months of summer, altho we have freezing episodes in fall & winter & the rare snow event.

  6. i have a 42 ft yacht. please give me advice on how to make a victory garden/chicken coup for 1 person. space is limited to around 200-300 cubic feet and weight is also a bit of a limiting issue. what would be the go to herbs/veggies under that circumstance if climate/growlights arnt an issue. love you channel! you literally save lives!

  7. He's so mental to think people can grow enough food at home to survive. Most people barely have a garden. It's fucking insulting.

  8. I totally agree, I live in Iraq, my parents used to tell me how people starved in the 90's duo to political reasons, if only they understood the importance of being self sufficient, times would be easier.

  9. I so miss my Colombian tropical fruits, especially mangoes (best in the world), anon, passion fruit, etc., I wish I could grow them but live too far north now. Blessings.

  10. Great video SSM! Sad to see that you were/are so right in what's to come. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and blessings!

  11. I believe you can live off only your garden, personally, but, I am soooooo looking forward to getting some chickens to trade room and board for compost and eggs!

  12. Interestingly everything you talked about here is happening now. Huge prices for food and fuel with stagnating wages. It's exactly why I'm looking to grow more stuff, and I have to say your videos are really enjoyable and encouraging. Thank you.

  13. hello, reporting back from September 2022, the world in a predicament situation, the recession happened to almost 70% of countries in the world, in the brink of economic collapse 😀
soon we will go into famine too, 300 million lives are into famine right now as I type this. The post covid and post Ukraine Russia war really shakes the world foundation.
I hope everyone who reads this can survive these struggling times ahead.

  14. Yes. If the neoliberal globalist pro climate co2+human murderers with war, disease, energy and food shortages and toxic seizures…. Dont forbid it for nitrogen reasons

  15. This video is more relevant now, then the time it was produced… Here we had covid plandemic, now Ukraine war – and lots of other non-mediating countries, who are more like Don King, but war promoters. Let' just hope nuclear destruction does not enter the craziness. The only other thing I would have like to add to this video is, perhaps some kind of diary self sufficiency, like a cow or two and perhaps some rabbits also for meat.

  16. Whst about chicken feed and lids for canning ? Maybe wax works on Mason lid jars. I don't know

  17. I know its a bit late for a comment, but I couldn't have stated it better myself about not wanting to live completely off grid, but wanting to be able to if need be. Most often when you voice that opinion people look at you like your off a bit. I'm only beginning my journey I got 6 chickens a year ago, and have plans to make some small raised beds this spring. Your an inspiration keep it up!

  18. Well well… almost 2023 and this video is still perfect. Greenhouse foundation almost done, chicken coop and run full of girls. Tons of seeds and different methods for potting and raised beds. I love to mow but I'm going to love tending to local wildflower patches even more. It's a difficult time in human history, but in my personal and immediate perspective I am looking forward to our future here.❤
