Quick update after some time off for the holidays. I don’t know what happened to the Queen Anthurium aside from needing a aroid soil that holds some more moisture. How it got knocked off the stand and ended up with a giant hold in the leaf is beyond me. Also Looked at how the cold hardy palms did with the blizzard that swept through last week. I will talk more in depth about treating cold damaged palms next week when I have some more supplies on hand and ready to use. Cold damaged palms can be a scary thing to deal with, but with these sabal minor palms and others like needle palms and windmill palms, usually a few treatments with fungicide will do the trick.

  1. Hope those palms will be ok. Sorry about the plant that fell and now has damaged leaf. It’s pretty cool looking. Watching just now o was thinking about how high your electric bill might be but guess that’s the cost for us addicted to tropical plants

  2. Hi Jeff, yay, Toby and Charlie TV! Sorry about your palms outside! Office looking good, can't wait to see the finished project and what plants you have there! i used to water my peace lilies with goldfish water…they loved it! Happy New Year!

  3. I ordered a Brakens brown magnolia, at least I think that’s what it is, several months ago hoping to get it in the ground before the bad weather showed up, it never arrived so I was thinking that they were waiting to send it in the spring. Nope somehow it showed up right after snowmageddon, ALMOST frozen solid. I was so angry! What the heck am I supposed to do with it? It’s only hardy to zone 6, which I am, but it’s in a container and I KNOW it won’t survive the winter outside. I could put it in our detached garage but I hardly EVER go out there, I rarely ever leave the house, so I wouldn’t be able to keep an eye on it. I’m thinking maybe it would survive on our unheated porch, it’s totally enclosed, but it doesn’t receive very much light so I am uncertain as to what to do ? Any suggestions would most definitely be welcome? Please and thank you . ⛄️❄️💚🙃

  4. Happy New Year you! 😀 I did the same thing with a bamboo stick as curtain rod 😉 It's still doing it's job. Nice of you to buy the loveseat for the cat hehhe. Stay warm!

  5. Oh the new light is SO awesome! I love it! The cube looks like it may be quite entertaining as well ! Yes your family knows you well and it looks like you had a great Christmas! ⛄️❄️💚🙃

  6. Oh I do like all of your new toys! I think I found a next year’s Christmas present for my son. The magnetic spinning cube would be right up his alley ! ⛄️❄️💚🙃

  7. Thank you for letting us see all of your fur babies! How’s Mr. tortoise doing? I forgot his name😢 not fond of lizards so to be honest don’t miss seeing him. ⛄️❄️💚🙃

  8. Thank you Jeff, I’m hoping you made memories with your family this holiday season. See you next time, stay safe, stay healthy and have a very Happy New Year! ⛄️❄️💚🙃

  9. ⛄️❄️💚🙃 I’m thinking that I have to put the snowman away since almost all of our snowmageddon has melted away. ❄️💚🙃

  10. I got cold damage even down here. I didn't pull the orchids in and it only got to 39, which they've tolerated before, but several soft leafed types the leaves look like they got hit by frost (but I know there wasn't any and one of them is completely enveloped in the mango tree, so it shouldn't have gotten frost even if we had it. I think it was the cold dry wind (24 F) that did them in. On the deciduous plants, no big deal so long as the canes weren't affected. Some of the others, well, we'll have to wait and see. And all the upper tips on the Asian Snow Jasmine out front got burned.

  11. HaHa I used the bamboo for my sons room darkening curtains lol great minds think alike… I was also gifted a lego plant for Christmas its a Bonsai…You do a lot of hard work so try to relax on New Years day have a happy one…PS love all your plants and videos thanks for the hard work you do on those too…

  12. Oh boy I almost forgot to tell you ! I got a philodendron splendid and a Thai constellation for Christmas. I don’t care for the soil they’re planted in but the nursery told my daughter not to repot them now because they’re sleeping. I’m trying to figure out the best soil mix to use because I’m definitely an underwaterer . But maybe not with them because I’m going to be a hover mom over them for sure. ❄️💚🙃

  13. You could also center the picture above the aquarium too…then add something

  14. Got down to 18 degrees here in middle GA. Got 2 large pindo palms in the ground, one is several yrs old, the other is 2 yrs old. Hoping they will be ok. My windmill palm is in a pot but I wrapped it in a thick quilt & it looks good. My 3 huge sago palms in the ground are burnt so will be losing all their fronds come spring. What kind of fungicide for the crown of the palms would you suggest? I had not heard of this. Might had been able to save a 10 yr old palm from crown rot a few yrs ago had I known about it.😞 live & learn for all of us palm owners who want the tropics in our backyard. 😄 VERY cool lights!!! I kinda did the bamboo curtain rod…maybe if it was just bigger in diameter? Lol

  15. Another year I’ve enjoyed you, plants & the pets 🥰
Hope you’re keeping up with your health.
    I’m just putting along
I hope this year will be better because the last 4 years have just been too challenging

  16. Sabal minor hardiness should be better described by those claiming they are "hardy" that far north out of their native range. Leaf hardiness vs bud hardiness may be different. -6F is way out of what they would normally experience – plus the dry wind probably is what lead to the bad leaf burn. Even the native minors up in NE Alabama at Weiss Lake are in 7b which may experience temps that cold in rare events would suffer leaf damage. However they do experience single digits (being in 7b) more commonly and survive.
My blackburniana looks like your minors. The spear so far looks okayish, but the fronds are >50% burned from the winds. Surprisingly, the Butia has minimal frond damage – must have picked a good one! 🙂
IMO: If the palm survives completely unprotected and returns from the meristem (not including frond damage) I would call that hardy. If unprotected the palm suffers bud damage and ultimately dies without intervention in the form of H2O2 and fungicide being applied to the crown – obviously not.
Honestly, at -6F Im surprised they have any living tissue on them at all. Looks like the thinnest tissue furthest away is what was damaged (wind). Makes sense.

  17. I feel like you should leave the bamboo "curtain rod" up. It's so you… Just going out into your garden and repurposing something but this time for your house….perfect ❤️👌

  18. Maybe you have Sabal ‘Louisiana’ or something because I guess they grow faster and are less evergreen? That Lego orchid is actually really cool! As is the bamboo curtain rod! 😆 and Happy new year!

  19. I advise 6a/b people to put their minors in a sunny location within a few feet of house and pick best varieties. We have reports of many people having minors go into negative F temps with spotting or minor frond damage which seems to me to be a win. My Unprotected ones close to the house at -1F look unfazed while the worst ones have spotting.
