    Maybe the wood ash will be beneficial to the cane plants as it adds potassium, phosphorus and magnesium and higher component of calcium carbonate that alkalinizes soil.
    Soil pH is critical as nutrients ions are best available at pH 6-7 for your average plant.
    From my preliminary search tropical forest soils such as Vietnamese upland are acidic. So you're doing good.
    Though best to test soil with pH meter.
    Nice forest loam you added too. More watering please.
