‘Oregon Sunset’ leafs out in the early spring with large rounded plum colored leaves and a growth habit with lots of lateral yet slightly upright branching. This forms a beautiful mid-sized spreading Japanese maple reaching about 7ft in height by 10 ft wide in 20 years. This size and shape makes this Japanese maple an ideal Japanese maple for small garden spaces. Fall colors are the colors of a sunset, brilliant shades of orange & red.
If you want an even smaller tree in height trim out the central leader at an early age creating a wide-spreading red Japanese maple with a large palmate leaf. Examples of this can be seen at the JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State. This gives a great alternative and provides a lot of color while not blocking vision elsewhere in the garden. For best growth, protection from the hot afternoon sun is recommended.
