I am Japanese and I would like to recommend "Ise Jinguu" in Mie Prefecture. It is the most important shrine in our country. Very beautiful, spiritual, outstanding place. I believe you could feel "Japan's animism" by visiting there.

Nara, the ancient capital of Japan which is even older than Kyoto, is criminally underrated! Horyuji Temple is the oldest wooden building in the world that is still standing, and the great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple is the largest wooden building in the world. I would call that definitely unmissable.
