Today we’re doing more harvesting and frost protection in the backyard garden as we prepare for some unusually cold weather here in south Georgia. We’ll be covering some of our raised beds, pruning others, and harvesting some so that the frost doesn’t burn these delicious greens.

It’s also time to move our chicken tractor as they’ve finished grazing the “Overwintering Mix” we planted in one of our 30×35′ plots. We’ll tell you how we’re deciding where to put the chicken tractor next so the chickens can continue to add fertilizer to our backyard garden plots.

  1. We.got bit.really.bad by out 28.degree.that.ruenes into 15 degree.
Oh well. Time.for.starting spring.seeds anyway like peppers

    Whem.do u start your spring stuff ???

  2. It's -4° this Christmas Eve morning. I wish I could have some fresh greens for dinner tonight. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  3. Good morning, it’s 6am December 24 here in Spartanburg county. I just checked and it’s 8 degrees. I double covered everything I didn’t pick with agrobond then plastic or quilts. I’m hoping they’re not gone. Seeing you harvest your kale and mustard hmmmm, maybe I should have picked some of the collards too. I keep wanting to wait till January. Great and well timed video.

  4. In NE Bama… once more list the fall crop worth all the prepping… just hoping the dogs and fruit trees make it through. Hauling water to the rabbits and birds.
I'm really thinking without a greenhouse fall gardening isn't worth it here. 😕

  5. Merry Christmas to you & your beautiful family, too! I went straight online & bought some Savannah mustard seeds! I think my rabbits & chickens would enjoy them, too! God Bless!

  6. 23º sounds like a heatwave to me! We are dealing with temps around 10º with wind chill taking us down around 0º. It’s supposed to get up into the 20’s today, We will see. If the forecast is correct, we will break above 32º tomorrow, which would be awesome! I don’t have a lot planted because we had such a crazy amount of rain over the past month before this deep chill. Garlic, some hardy lettuces, and a few onions. More onions to plant but the rain prevented me. I hope it’s not going to be too late when it warms up in a few days. I’m ready to get out in the greenhouse to do some seed starting for spring!

  7. Freezing in Florida as well . . . we had a strip party at my house yesterday. However, it's not what you think. With a low of 20 degrees predicted for tonight in Gainesville we had a number of our neighbors come over and strip fruit from our citrus trees that would otherwise be destroyed in tonight's hard freeze. Everyone went home happy with a bucket full of orange sunshine!
I had about 30 fruits left on my red grapefruit tree and well over 100 oranges on my Hamlin orange tree that needed harvesting after I had taken all that I could use. Alas, the fruits on my highly productive Valencia orange tree are still green and hard (they ripen in March), so I will lose that part of my citrus crop tonight.

  8. Is that a variety of dwarf zinnia? They look much shorter than the ones I've grown in the past but perfect for a container

  9. I think you’ll enjoy the meat bird experience. My first time I did the quick turn around Cornish Cross but now I’m doing white American Bresse that I got hatching eggs of from Sidney & Tory Holland (The Nakid Gardeners) https://youtube.com/@TheNakidGardeners … the hatch rate was great and since they’re dual purpose I can continue hatching for continual food. I’m also doing a larger breed called German Bielefelder I got from Omega Hills Farm https://youtube.com/@Omegahillsfarm
Both birds are big but grow out slower than the Cornish cross. We are almost ready to harvest (later in January). My first time was in July (not smart for Southeast Mississippi (too hot 🥵/humid) … I did a video… we (my neighbor and I) were struggling lolololol. Lessons learned! But I enjoyed it so much I immediately got the hatching eggs to keep going! It did take a couple weeks before I actually ate the chicken (had to get past the smell & experience first ha ha) https://youtu.be/Def0ns2MhWw

  10. Moved all my tomatoes (the ones in buckets) into my garage. It got down to 35 last night in SE FL. So glad I did too! Today one of the romas are already turning pink! Stay warm LDF and Merry Christmas to y'all!

  11. What type dill was that? It looks like the type I want to plant. Why don't you chop and drop the other plants you trim? Throwing them on the ground is a waste. What type mustard is that, too? Thanks!

  12. Christmas day forecast high here at my SoCal home is 80F, so not cold everywhere. Got a funny story for you Travis. Me and hubs are native to CA, so some foods and brands are different for us. One of those would be mayo. You talk highly of Dukes and I finally saw it in a local grocery store and got us some. I pulled it out of the fridge to make some dressing and hubs saw it. He said, "What are you making? That looks like some kind of fancy mayo." I kid you not. Merry Christmas.
