One of the past plants I’ve featured back in the day on “365 Days of Plants”, Dioscorea elephantipes, is in the spotlight again—and this time with a more extended care video + repot in preparation for rehoming it.

  1. ❤❤❤
    Love this little series

    Please do continue this

There’s just not much info on this plant online so this is gold for me

    Recently acquired a baby
    One

I relate to killing it by forgetting
I forgot about my Stephanie erecta and it never came back ❤
It just shrivelled and dried up
Would you still recommend watering when it’s dormant?
Just to make sure the roots don’t dry up ?

  2. I bought about 10 seeds for a couple of Euros 2 years ago, they all sprouted and the caudex are only about 3-3.5 cm wide. Every time I have a thrips infestation they all get the chop which makes pest management easy considering they have never failed to sprout again. I should repot and expose the caudex but I keep forgetting. Speaking of caudex plants, my Stephania erecta bulbs was dormant for 2 years before they decided to wake up. It was your collab with Terrascapes garden centre in Singapore that made me confident in chopping the vines down to the caudex during off-season/dormant periods. I would have thought I've failed again at keeping a plant alive.

  3. Time to start another channel detailing terrarium care for Mrs. Anole and the kids lol

  4. Would you recommend top dressing for more than just aesthetics? Also! My Stephania erecta started sprouting in the fall 🤔 idk what to do with it

  5. I have one too. There’s so much bad information online about them. Once I started watering more it shot out so many leaves.

  6. That’s odd, the ones I have sprouted in spring an now the leaves are gone, so it acted opposite of what it should have. 🤔 Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays💚

  7. My husband's never been intrested in my plant hobby until now!
    He's taking notes ✏️…🌿+🧔=💪🏋️‍♂️👀

  8. I have more than enough houseplants and should not add to my collection. But this one looks so interesting! It would be hard to resist. Such an interesting video. Thank you!

  9. Fantastic overview of one of my favorite plants!

Additional tips from a Dioscorea collector:
    – Repotting while in vine can force it to go into dormancy. It's ideal to repot them while dormant, in order to maintain its natural growth cycle.
    – Many growers insist on covering the entire caudex, which they find can drastically increase the size of the caudex vs having it sit on top of the soil line. Of course, while it's under the soil it is more prone to rot, so using an inorganic mix (like what Summer is using) is necessary
-Seedlings will be unlikely to climb. Giving them a trellis (not just a metal U) and training them to vine, will drastically increase its growth. As it matures, the plant will naturally want to vine in order to grow at a faster pace.
    – There are a few non-caudex species, like Dioscorea Discolor, that can be propagated via cuttings.
    – Dioscorea are dioecious, meaning each plant is either male or female. Thus, in order to produce seeds, you'll need both a female and male plant to pollinate
    – Certain species are highly poached, such as Dioscorea Mexicana. Ensure sellers are propagating from seed, instead of poached from nature, in order to help maintain the populations in their natural habitat.

  10. I bought some seeds of these guys after you mentioned them in a video in 2020. They’re doing great! I can’t wait until they’re super big hehe

  11. Did you ever cover care tips for when the plant isn't dormant? I was waiting to see how you water it during the growing season.

  12. I love to watch you re pot. You're the only one who teaches us "how to care for our plants, the soil to use, the difference between perlite and vermiculite."
    You Rock!

  13. I remember my horticultural science professor talking about a plant he had (maybe a tree?) he was the palm man. Loved him! I didn’t get a good grade because I always struggled in school but yet I learned so much from him! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️🪴💚

  14. I have one of these but I forgot what it was called, so when it lost its leaves last year I totally panicked, and was so relieved when it grew new ones just as I was giving up and planning to throw it out… glad to learn 1) what it's called again and 2) losing its leaves is normal!

  15. Thank you for bringing this plant to my attention!
    I’m in love 💚
    And babies!!!

  16. Pumice. Does not float like perlite. Better. My nursery had custom potting soil made that was so great in Oregon (where all the nurseries are). Dioscorea grows pretty quickly here in Tucson. Mine has doubled in less than 2 years. Considerably larger than the one in the video. I suggest a small trellis for the pot. 18" tall or so for young plant. Looks good and compact when grown on the structure. I think you would have been happy if you had given the plant a pot 50% larger than the one you chose. They are not slow, and they can respond to sufficient size. I do agree that sharp drainage is good. Oh, you finally got to a minor trellis.

  17. I'm dying to know how these plants know what time of the year it is! If they're not taking a cue from the weather/light, then what makes these plants stick to their original growing cycle, even if they're grown from seed here in the northern hemisphere?
