Hello! My name is Bethany and I grow things in my rooftop container garden in Chicago, zone 6a. I’ve been container gardening for four years and am by no means an expert, just someone who enjoys sharing their garden journey.

In this video, I’ll be putting together my herb garden for this year. Let me know what other herbs I should add!

  1. I just moved my herbs into their pots too. I was concerned about the cold weather as well so I'm running an experiment with half the plants indoors under grow lights and the other half outdoors. The lowest it'll get around my neck of the woods is about 50f and next week the lows (thankfully) will be around 60f+.

As for suggestions, I'm not sure if you're a fan but cilantro is awesome.

  2. Chives…I leave them in a large pot and they stay in it all winter and come back strong in the spring.

  3. Nw iowa here, high 40s low in the 30s tonight. But hoping soon to plant. I'd be interested in how you use the herbs. Trying some this year.

  4. I just found chocolate mint, orange mint and apple mint! Excited to use them in teas! I also found pineapple sage. I planted all my herbs in 1 gallon grow bags this year. We’ll see how this goes! Zone 5b Central Illinois

  5. So pretty! I love the herbs in containers ensemble. I can’t wait to see your garden this summer! Oh the pesto basil is delicious. Great job!

  6. What a lovely space to garden with herbs in terracotta pots. Just a thought. There are spray paints or stains for wood and metal to keep them going longer against the elements. How about an outdoor fleece fabric for cold nights, so you won't have to bring them in n out. It's made light weight enough to not damage plants and keep chilly nights from damaging. You can throw it over and hold with clamps if it's windy.

  7. The last few years I've had a terrible problem with a fungus/mildew which is common to basil plants, have you noticed this too? This year I found special mildew resistant seeds from Johnny's which I started indoors. Where did you get your basil?
