Season Three, Episode 00158
Botanical Latin Names: Lunaria rediviva
Just when you thought you had a common well known old-timey garden biennial figured out it goes and tosses you a curveball by way of its cousin which chances are mixed in your seed packets. Today’s video covers Perennial Silver Dollar plant which is also called Perennial Honesty and is native to Europe. Perennial Silverdollar plant does everything that your normal Silver Dollar Plant does; it still produces papery seed pods that resemble silver dollar pieces. The flower color is the same but what differs is that this perennial cousin produces little tubers on its roots which allow it to survive winter. I would not have ever known myself had I not been trying to transplant a few of these plants and noticed the tubers. Like Lunaria annua, it’s foliage is edible and both are in the cabbage family.
LITFM Garden shorts are intended as a series of short videos highlighting a specific plant/family in the Botanical Testing Gardens. The Gardens are located in North Carolina (Zone 8a). Hopefully this video gives you some good garden ideas and if you have questions or comments let me know.
