Stay tuned for Part 2! We have lots more lawn to sheet mulch.
The race is on this week to get the front yard sheet mulched before the snow flies. Will I get it all done in time? And will I have enough cardboard?
This is the start of an ongoing project to replace the lawn with a perennial forest garden (food forest). I have big dreams of transforming this front yard into an abundant perennial garden system and the first step is to kill the grass with cardboard and woodchips.
Fall and winter is the ideal time to sheet mulch since the cardboard and wood chips have lots of time to break down before planting time in the spring. The freeze/thaw cycles in our mild winter also help break down the materials into rich soil more quickly.
