This is how I set up a drip line irrigation to water my raised beds and in ground garden. Scroll down for list of materials and equipment used in this video. This video is not sponsored by any specific company or brand. I bought and have been using the products listed below (unless otherwise noted).
In this video, I am showing you a step by step on how to set up a watering system even if you only have 1 planter. This is my preferred way of watering my garden, which is using a drip line emitter hose with 6″ spacing with a 1/4″ valve to control the water flow – assuming there is already a main drip line with 1/2″ hose set up. If you don’t, at the end of the video, you can see an overview on what is the set up for the main 1/2″ drip line from a water source – I will post a separate video that goes into more detail.
Remember, there are other methods of drip line irrigation depending on the needs and preferences.
Special thanks to Berlian and Jon for allowing me to use their garden to film this video. 🙂 You might hear Trumpet crowing in the background in the video. Trumpet is their rooster. That’s right! They raise chickens!! That is our plan for next year 😉 Check out her video on their chickens: https://youtu.be/Q14dfSobLYw
Ok, here is the list:
– 1/4″ straight barb connector https://thd.co/3509bYS
– 1/4″ drip line hose ( (black) https://thd.co/341b2gP
– 1/4″ In-Line Shut Off Valve https://thd.co/3412SVx
– 1/4″ Emitter Hose (brown) 6″ spacing https://thd.co/34Ysx0x
– Goof plug https://thd.co/2SW15Ll
– 1/4″ Hole punch https://thd.co/2Iz2DsF
– Hose cutter https://amzn.to/3lJa92i
– Latex coated workshop gloves https://bit.ly/3ja98il (makes it easy and less cumbersome to handle the hose and connectors).
Materials for 1/2″ Main Drip Line:
– 3/4″ Female Hose Thread x 1/2″ Compression Swivel Adapter https://thd.co/3lQZyCE
– 1/2″ Compression end cap https://thd.co/3k0rF1K
– 1/2″ drip hose (black) https://thd.co/2T3IOeN
– Hose Timer – There are plenty out there. I am using BHyve (controlled via bluetooth or wifi, through a smart phone app – https://thd.co/31dyiX8). I will do a separate video to go over that system, because that is the one I use to control the sprinkler valves and all of the drip stations in my garden. So subsribe and stay tuned 🙂
But if you want to start small, you can use a less expensive and simpler hose timer like this one https://thd.co/31asXzT
Direction Summary:
1/2″ hose – Straight Barb Connector – 1/4″ drip line – 1/4″ valve – 1/4″ drip line emitter – secure to the ground as needed – Goof Plug.
– To connect the 1/4″ line to the 1/2″, puncture a hole using the Hole Punch.
– Cut the black hose to the length needed. Attach the straight barb connector and the 1/4″ valve to each end of it.
– Insert the end of the barb connector to the 1/2″ hose.
– Attach the end of the 1/4″ valve to the drip line emitter.
– Arrange the drip line emitter on the bed, using the ground staple or hose clamps to secure the hose to the ground as needed.
– Cut the emitter hose and cap it with the Goof Plug.

Thank you Kat! Very useful info. I learned something new:)
I’m setting up irrigation system in my garden this weekend.
Great information, I need to update some of my drip lines and this is a great idea.
Very informative. Glad I found your site. Keep it up.
thanks for the video. i set up my irrigation system for the first time couple of days ago. i notice that some of my drip emitter gets lots of water but some are minimal. do you know what is the cause? is my pressure psi too low? or are there dirt or something that is interfering with the drip?
Love it! This is Soo helpful!
