Kosho-ji, with its garden, was opened by the founder Dogen of the Soto sect during the Kamakura period, and was rebuilt in its current location during the Edo period. Even in the same Zen sect, the Soto sect has few temples with gardens, unlike the Rinzai sect. However, here Koseiji will have three or more of garden space, such as precincts in dry landscape and Pond appreciation garden.
Also, when you walk along the long and narrow approach called Kotozaka surrounded by steep rocks, the Tanigawa flowing beside it sounds like the tone of a koto. You can enjoy the atmosphere of the Soto sect, which is famous for strict zazen training, and the scenery of cherry blossoms and autumn leaves in spring and autumn.

京都の宇治にある曹洞宗興聖寺の庭園。
宇治川と渓谷がつくり出す山紫水明の自然風景と、平等院鳳凰堂や宇治上神社など、平安時代から宗教的雰囲気が漂い文化価値の高い場所です。宇治川を少し川上へ行くと、あまり知られていない石立の見事な日本庭園があります。
庭園のある興聖寺は、鎌倉時代に曹洞宗の開祖道元が開いたお寺で、江戸時代に現在の場所に再興されました。同じ禅宗でも臨済宗と違い庭園を持つお寺は少ないのですが、ここ興聖寺は境内に枯山水と池泉式など３つ以上の庭園空間を有しています。
また、険しい岩肌に囲まれた琴坂と呼ばれる細長い参道を歩くと、脇を流れる谷川が琴の音色のように響きます。厳しい座禅修行を行うことで有名な曹洞宗の雰囲気と、春秋には桜と紅葉の風景を楽しむことができます。
