Food once touched with the chopsticks must be eaten and not discarded. Not a scrap is to be wasted. At the conclusion of the meal
Hot water is passed around, and each one, using a pickled radish for the purpose, cleans the bowls of every particle, after which, if one is thirsty, drinks the water, not forgetting, however, to deposit the last dregs in a common container passed for the same hungry spirits. The meal finishes with a chant, the substance of which is an expression of thanks for the nourishment just received and a pledge to use this strength for the spiritual welfare of all beings.
