We ‘cold stratify’ many types of seeds, often many thousands of seeds in total. This video shows a very basic approach we use to keep the seeds cool/cold but not freezing and moist but not sopping wet or ice jammed. This basic idea can be extended or adjusted to meet all sorts of needs, so please take it as a very basic starting off point, not a perfect system by any means!

  1. How do you go about storing tree/shrub seeds up until this point, that were harvested in the summer ? Such as goumi, cherry, serviceberry, etc ?

  2. Great vid n info. Could this system be used for some comfrey plants I harvested but wasn't able to plant be for the ground froze? Thanks

  3. I store my seeds in pots with potting mix, wood chips or peat moss with hardware cloth over the top and a brick on top to help hold it down. Then mulch all around it. Your system looks easier but I’m just using what I have available. Learning more all the time, thank you!💕

  4. I past years you were stratifying seeds in your root cellar. Why the change? Thanks. Based on your experience We've been able to stop using our electricity guzzling walk-in cooler (left over from the market farming days) and transition to outdoor stratification. So much easier to let the seeds wake up on their own schedule.

On a different topic, what species do you prefer to plant in air prune boxes vs direct seeding into nursery beds/pots/high tunnel.
Thanks again for sharing your experience.
