Watercolor Garden Sketchbook Artistic Process Soft Pastel Blossoms 😍: In this video I will share my artistic process from sketching, to color mixing, to painting soft pastel blossoms. Set to soft music with captions sharing details of the process I hope you enjoy this relaxing watercolor demo.

In this demo we will be painting Tea Tree Blossoms using a limited 4 color palette.
If you choose to paint along here is my formula for an emotive watercolor gardening experience:

1) Sketch: Pencil sketch and transfer of the blossoms

2) Color Mixing:
Pink: Base color QR mix in QM + QS
Orange: Base color QS mix in QR + QM
Brown: Base color QS mix in PT
Blue: Base color PT mix in QM

Abbreviation Legend:
QS: Quincridone Sienna
QR: Quinacridone Red
QM: Quinacridone Magenta
PT: Pthalo Turquoise

3) First Layer: Mixing our 4 colors to a tea consistency, we will lay in our base colors of pastels – pink, orange, brown and blue beginning to shape our blossoms with soft ethereal colors and add a soft blue background

4) Second Layer: Mixing our 4 colors to a cream consistency, we will develop our value by deepening shadow areas, and use negative painting to create the flower centers.

5) Balance your painting: Are your colors balancing? Value? Details? Add balancing highlights by softening and/or lifting, add balancing details with negative painting in flower centers, add balancing values with touches of dark color that echo across the page, and add balancing textures with dry brushing, and/or stencil lifting.

6) Final step – (not shown in video) using watered down Daniel Smith White Watercolor Ground cover the branches and buds along with some of the outer petals to soften them and send them into the background.

Color Mix Tip: Dip the tip of your angle shader brush into a base color and mix together with one tablespoon water. Continue to dip the tip of brush to get a bit of mix in color and/or base color until you get a favorable color blend.

Adding more water = tea consistency/ lighter values
Less water =milk consistency/ darker values
No water = honey consistency / full value
Caution: Pthalo colors are very dominant in mixes, less is more.
