When you imagine an alcoholic beverage unique to Japan, I think most people would think of saké. But have you ever heard of Shōchu before?
Shochu is a distilled spirit unique to Japan, made from 16 different ingredients including rice, barley, potatoes, and buckwheat.
Shochu was a commoner’s drink made in farmers’ gardens from around the Sengoku period. Around the 20th century, with the development of production, delivery, and refrigeration techniques, shochu quickly became popular throughout the country.
Today, it’s probably more difficult to find an izakaya (Japanese-style pub) that doesn’t serve Shōchu. Especially highballs, a mixture of shochu and soda water, are very popular.
It is said that barley shochu is the easiest to drink for beginners, so please try it with water.

There is a product recently released in Australia called -196
It is a lemon drink with Shochu and Vodka. I am not sure if I could taste the Shochu properly but it was quite nice.
Oddly enough i know this drink due to a quest in yakuza 0
Does this include the 4 to 1 liter bottles of whiskey that you can get from Coop and othet supermarkets here in Japan?
Japan also distills whisky – which is very high quality.
Shochu is what I drink when I’m in Japan
I thought shochu is Korean's alcohol
Barley Shōchū is the best. Well anything barley is best imo. Especially with beef 🤤
and which is the hardest?
I heard that samurai from Satsuma were heavy shochu drinkers
Have yet to try shochu, but gotta say actual japanese whiskey is fantastic. Not sure if youtube let’s me write the name of my favourite producer though..
I rather like it in soda water with a squeeze of lime or lemon. Ice cold.
thanks for the alcohol recommendation.
Our local liquor store has a pretty decent selection. I find sweet potato and or barley to taste the best alone.
Had some while slurping ramen in a yatai in Fukuoka's Nagahama district, in the pouring rain. One of my best memories ever.
Speaking of shochu, when someone ask me to buy a bottle of "Shochu", I always have to ask them twice whether it is "Shochu" or "Soju" they want.
One lemon sour please !!🙏
So I just got a katana and the blade and hand gard are staring to get a little wiggly should I be worried
Made in people’s gardens? So it’s like Japanese Moonshine then? Kinda?
I want to see a video where Shogo goes to an Izakaya and gently takes us through all the different drinks as if he was a seasoned drink master! 😎…
I've never wanted to visit a distillery before, but if Shogo gave us a tour, I'd go and learn sooo much! 😄…
Shogos voice is sooo calming! I never get bored or tired hearing him explain facts like some other history channels that speak in very monotonous tones with no inflection…
Shogos voice is friendly and calming! 😎😊😎
He mentioned farmers so another reference to the edo period
dude i like you. i want to learn so much more…..thank you
I would try that, but it has definitly nothing to do with "whiskey". Japanese Whisky (by the way written without e, irish whiskey is written with e) is a whole different thing. Whisky is made from grain and is matured in wooden barrels more than three years which gives it it's golden color.
Wow
I only had straight up Whiskey made on Japan.
For relaxing time, make it Suntory time.
I love Shochu
焼酎?Will search about that! 😄
I find it more similar to italian grappa than whisky.
Some of my best and worst nights in Sasebo started with Shochu
jp: shochu, kr: soju, cn: ?
I see the whiskey lists with "shochu" on nearly all the menus at the Japanese restaurants near me. I've never tried it because I like my sake, but it is on my to-do list. 😁
my family use to make shochu, my dad actually worked in a distillery that my uncle owned
