Mexico is not safe anymore.I was there is Feb 2022 & I sensed the despair of the people & lack of any real feeling of hope in Rosarito Beach…Covid driven maybe.But I think the cartels & corrupt government are to blame.
It happens in Oakland California every day.
I have been robbed many times in my life here in the USA. I am 65 years old now. So it does happen everywhere.

My view after 6 years in Central America is that there are 2 ways to live down there (1) have hired security of some kind or (2) don't own anything valuable.

I grew up there, there is some places I wouldn't go but most place you sort of have to have your guard up just in case.

I got robbed by a motorcycle cop in Cancun on the way to the airport. Said I was speeding ( I wasn’t ) and wanted me to “come to the police station and pay a fine”. I refused and he immediately offered to “allow you to pay your fine here”. He asked for “200 American dollars “. Told him I only had 1100 pesos ( I should have said I had no money) and he said “that will do”. He took the money, got on his motorcycle and rode away. This was the last impression we had of Mexico before we left. He insured that we will never vacation in Mexico again.
Your first mistake was going to Mexico.

Why are going to Mexico anyways, cartels run the country, don’t go there, period. There are much better places to vacation. Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands if you want to get away. Florida has many places to go and much better beaches, safer, and much more to do and visit.
I’m so sorry this happened to you. I was recently in Guadalajara and got out of there almost immediately. Of all the places I’ve been to in Mexico, I definitely felt the least safe in Guadalajara. Even the taxi driver told me how dangerous it is there. I’d never go there again except to leave from the airport to another destination and even that would make me nervous. The motorcyclists ride right up on the sidewalks. I’ve never had a problem or felt unsafe anywhere else in Mexico other than Guadalajara.
