Growing in Free Cardboard Boxes, growing food. Boxes are free and best of all when they break down and turn into Compost, you will end up with Great soil next growing season with soil you made. Growing in cardboard boxes, totes and in the ground, food of all kinds.
From what I can find, Corrugated boxes are printed with an Environmentally friendly type ink, but I would not compost other types of food boxes like cereal boxes, cookie boxes, cake mix boxes and so forth, as those inks are made to last lots of handling, look showy and are shiny and are ‘iffy”.
This is TULLE that Great Fabric SO CHEAP and last all year outside here, here is an aff. link to check out, many colors, I usually get one of the greens, but any color will work great: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5575376117&toolid=10001&campid=5338267736&customid=&mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FTulle-Fabric-Bolt-54-X40yds-Wedding-Bridal-Party-Favor-Decoration-Tutu-Craft%2F381670793265%3Fvar%3D650737116165

"You know where to get 'em!" That's right. Just order something from Amazon, Walmart, or anyone else. They'll sometimes send a 5 oz anything in an insanely sized wasteful cardboard box. AND if you're in a rural area w/o convenient recycling…this is the way.
Hello. Robbie. Nora here. I prefer the Totes myself to Grow Food compost. I have 4 started so far. There doing very well. I found the Totes at the Thrift store. very cheap. The kitchen scraps and Dry leaves and twigs had broken down very quickly, i threw some potting soil on top of it a little bit. I peaked underneath the stuff all broke down in a couple of days !! I was very surprised and very happy. The cherry tomatoes and cucumbers and mint and green beans are already taking off. Thanks for your Teachings. I,VE subscribed. I Love all that you do. Your so talented and a smart cookie.
Yours is my new favorite channel! I bought a bunch of totes and can't wait to get started. Also thanks for the solar water fountain video. I just ordered a couple. I appreciate you and your creativity!
I love your walled cinder block tall wall. I wish I had this. Can I ask of this was a project that you did or was it there when you moved in? I also like the border you created with shelving? You have the ideal property for gardening. You are so creative and I luv watching your videos.
Please help! How to get rid of pest?, I got a infestation of thrips in the soil and snails on the ground, I grow in containers.
Hi Robbie!! I think it's great that you are giving people options that can work for them, like they can't afford or can't find totes. This is a solution that can work for them. Options are good!! Thanks!
Everything is looking good in your box garden, by the way!! Have a wonderful evening!!
I tried one year growing potatoes in cardboard cause I had no other place for them. Since we tend to get heavy rains, when it rains, it ruins cardboard really fast. I am not using them to grow in but to cover my beds before planting to keep the weeds down as well as on my pathways , less mud on my feet😉
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I love watching your vids Robbie. They give me fits & fevers tho. I watch one & an "itch" comes over me & i just GOTTA go out & get my hands dirty SOMEhow! I watched this vid late & couldn't bounce out into the yard messin' in the dirt so i had the thought to check Wallyworld for totes n such. They HAD THEM!!!–$6.98 ea–ordered 6, & some diatom earth & some Bt & some Sharpies to label the "lid strips" with. My hands are clean but i accomplished something for the garden anyway!
My wheel barrow came. My totes came. My raspberries and strawberries came. My neighbor was pruning and was very nice and gave them to me. I am shredding paper. Picked up more cardboard at costco. We had gale force winds today, so didn't do anything outside. Hoping to do some this weekend. Keep posting videos because they are so helpful. You rock!
How do you keep rattlesnakes out of your gardens? I am in SoCal too and the snakes are troublesome. Three sides of my property are wildlife reserve. I have snake fencing and block wall but still have several close encounters each year.
Please give tips on getting rid of ants. They are getting bad in my garden
Good ideas. I would reinforce the bottom with more cardboard. Cut the top flaps to double up the bottom or find extra cardboard.
I grew in boxes last year when I ran out of other containers. I live in Eastern Washington which gets a fair amount of snow. I grew wonderful peppers, squash and cucumbers in them. I will be able to use some of the boxes again this year.
😊👍
Just subscribed. A question. I want to garden but I am so terrified of snakes that i wont even walk in grass. Any suggestions to help me? I know it doesn’t seem real that I would live likethis, but i am 61 and have been this way since I was about 16. I have a beautiful yard that i NEVER set foot in.
If I used a cardboard box in England I would be lucky if it hasn’t falling apart on day 3. And slugs, I must have the largest colony of slugs in the world.
Thank You! Im doing This now. Im starting seeds in tiny box's untill I can afford containers/totes. You are a life saver!
Thank you Robbie for so much good information on growing in boxes! We have some boxes that have accumulated from Food Pantry hauls. I was thinking of using them to plant in. We only get about three months of growing time her in U.P. Of Michigan!
For the cedar planter box I was going to line it with a gArbage bag in order to last longer. I guess I should just use it for my flowers. Thoughts ?
Totes are $6.49 at Ollie's
I love your Channel. You're very informative. I found you because I was going to go buy a wooden raised garden for over $100. I even Googled them. Then I went on YouTube to just watch something and your channel popped up. The universe put me in your direction so that I could find my cheapest way to grow. Love light many blessings to you. Happy to have found you
QUESTION: The stuff in my totes has been breaking down amazing.
But there are so many many different types of bugs, not just the worms… everything from ant colonies (I think I got most of them gone by poking the dirt 3 days in a row like Robbie suggested!!!) to rolly pollys to long centipede type insects and many more, plus endless slugs.
Is this ok or what can I do?
Stuff did grow last year in the totes..but wondering if I'm doing something wrong.
I absolutely love that you put “not Clickbait“ on the video title image! Made me giggle. Also love your hat!
I love all your videos Robbie ❤ I have started a few boxes about 3 weeks ago and we have had downpours but the cardboard boxes are still perfect👍
ROBBIE, I ENJOY WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS VERY MUCH. YOUR ENTHUSIASM AND PASSION FOR TEACHING OTHERS TO GARDEN IS OUTSTANDING. I LIKE ALL YOUR IDEAS ESPECIALLY FOR US THAT ARE ON A STRICT BUDGET! I ALSO LIKE HOW YOU EXPLAIN THINGS IN A SIMPLE MATTER. SOME EXPERIENCED GARDENERS SEEM TO MAKE THINGS DIFFICULT WHEN EXPLAINING THINGS a d having you think you need all the fancy gadgets to be successful. So thank you for what you do!!!!!
oh, how timely….I'm doing this. (My husband is going to kick my butt for it, but oh well…)
I have 2 very sturdy boxes that even have handles. Problem is, they're only about 10-inches high. But they're about 24-inches long by 14-inchs…nice size for Zucchini.
I have a few other boxes that I'm cutting apart so that I can build up the sides of those 2 sturdy boxes. I'll use duck tape.
I can't find the inexpensive plastic containers at Walmart. I found 1, but no more. So, I'll use boxes for my extra plants.
I already have 40 10-gallon fabric containers filled with a blend using mushroom compost. Some are planted, some are waiting for frost-free days.
Robbie can you please do a video on how to get rid of ants and snails and slugs thank you so much😘
Robbie, thanks for the tip about getting totes from Walmart! I was looking through the totes and they were so expensive, but I kept on looking and found 18 gallon totes, buy 6 for $4.50 each! I got chairs last year and I'm making my own "Robbie garden"!

I just learned that ants that partner up with aphids. They protect them and both destroy the garden. I say just keep healthy plants and a sacrificial plant (no pesticide) and try to work WITH nature and not against it. You’ll get better results when we all can live together! 🙂
Hi robbie, when u zip tie the tulle to the stakes does it hold up against wind?? Also do u find tulle keeps the deer out??
I started new grape vine like that ( a few years ago)! We get a lot of rain. But. Ices are great.
Some people do use construction material/bags to line their boxes. But if this is all you have, then for sure, compost is always a blessing.
I had to giggle with the thought about using cardboard boxes here since we get 4 to 5 inches of rain each month plus snails, etc. I'll stick with the totes and use cardboard for compost. However, the boxes would work for someone in a hot, dry climate.
Thank You for the information on garbage bags, I did not know this. I am going to start my cardboard boxes once the last freeze is over, I am looking for totes and buckets I used to be able to find them everywhere on the curb on garbage day but it seems as if people are either getting to them before me or they are keeping them. Thank you for all you do, I wouldn't even be trying this if it wasn't for your videos, you touch more people than you know. I did spring for 2 solar fountains hopefully to draw birds and beneficial insects to my garden, I will put them in 5-gallon buckets because it gets so hot. I have 3 hummingbird feeders I got when my FIL passed away and will be setting those up also.
Hi Robbie & Gary, 👋thank you for your new garden ing ideas, didn't know you cold plant veggies in card board boxes, I will try that for my lettuce, 😁
After growing we compost them 🙌🏼🙌🏼
GREAT videos!!!!
I place my boxes in a plastic bag
I place saucers of cheap beer around and the slugs party hardy…😂
My plastic is on the outside of the box not inside
You are awesome. And here's all the info I need. You are loaded with wise and logical information. Thank you. Trying the boxes!
How do you garden in cardboard boxes in heavy-rainy weather like ours? Yours looks soooo practical and cool!
I wondering if a small cardboard box inside a grow bag would help retain some moisture. What are your thoughts?
Also wondering if doubling up (putting one or even two more boxes inside first box) boxes would make them last longer.
Rollie Polly trap? More info please
I’ve been growing using cardboard boxes bcuz I don’t have much money 💰 to buy totes etc. so far my potatoes zucchini cucumbers tomato watermelon cantaloupe sunflowers are growing well. Sadly I had to start this year buying my soil but from dollar tree and dollar general. I guess you could say I’m a poor person doing what I need to do to garden. I’ll let you know how I’m doing.
You mentioned how the boxes wick away water, I have been saving paper egg cartons and plan on filling them with scraps and moisture-retaining material, all those cotton balls from aspirin bottles may soon have a use. Hopefully, the worms will like them and maybe the roots will be drawn to them once it gets hot and dry. I am so excited to get started, we have more torrential rain headed our way this afternoon and tomorrow. I wish I could share it with you, I never ask the good Lord to stop the rain because you never really know when you will get it again, we have had unusually bad storms these last couple of years.
My totes, and food safe buckets, all die in the sun and heat here! IDK how cardboard boxes would survive the humidity for a week here.
Just began researching ideas for an indoor vegetable garden, on a tight budget. As a saver of boxes, as someone in the family seems to always be moving, this option is great to get me started. I am so happy I found your channel, especially with the bonus of the birdies!!
