In this episode of Garden Talk, I interview Locke Box. He grows both indoors as well as outdoors and he recently made the switch from using salt-based fertilizers (often referred to as synthetic) to using organic inputs – and that’s what we are going to get into in today’s episode. He talks all about how he used to grow with synthetic nutrients and how he now does it fully organic. What type of plants do you like to grow? Peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, citrus trees, basil, kale, grapes, house plants, let us know in the comments section below. If you enjoyed this video please click that thumbs up button 🙂

I have the urge to give my organic flowering plants a boost of salt fertilizer for more defined calyx growth, but I am a little weary of disturbing the microbes. I have a ton of Fox Farm Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz, Cha Ching salts from previous grows just sitting there and I'm wondering if I could put it to use. Chime in growmies and help a gal out. Keep it or toss it? Thank Chris for the awesome content as usual. 💜💛💚 MC
Peat Moss mix or soil ?
Note for new organic growers
50% soil moisture is usually ideal. microbes do their work and stay alive at that moisture level. Any more than that you risk anaerobic soil/root rot and any less you risk microbes dying.
I'm actually switching back from organic to synthetic. Organic I get nice Frosty dank rock hard nugs, but the yield is never really there in size. I've had better luck getting tall boy beer size colas with synthetics rather than organic. I'm only getting a half a pound from organic in a 3X3, I'm getting a pound with synthetic in a 3X3. One plant full wall to wall scrog. Come into cal/mag deficiency with organic right at the cotton ball stage of flower. LED grow lights require more Cal/mag.
485ppm out of the faucet. What chemical, mineral agent is high like that from tap?
Awesome video Bro.

💚👍
Nice one on a Sat night . ty
I run e act same setup and never have issues. Ph perfect is fantastic. Actually decided to use it on first organic grow. Had some issues and tries ph perfect. Issue fixed and no problems since.
I use micro greens for cover crops and I get to eat it 😋
You're not even wasting the water when it goes down the drain. It's just getting recycled back into tap. I'm sure a percentage is lost but certainly not all.
I smashed the like button so many times I accidentally hit the dislike button and left it! Killing it bro!
i mean if you are following a feed schedule then you are following ec
i use full strength salt nutes constantly..
I hotbox on the weekly sorry "locke box"
Only several minutes in and I already know. This is my favorite guest 😊
It's a REAL SCIENCE , TO LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY MIX NUTES….AND WHICH NUTES ARE MORE AVAILABLE AT WHAT PH IS OPTIMAL….PUSHING A PLANT & PROPERLY FEEDING THE RIGHT NUTES AT THE RIGHT STAGE….PPM/EC IS VITAL TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE FEEDING AND AT WHAT WEEK….. UNTIL YOU LEARN HOW TO MIX AND WHAT EC FOR EACH WEEK , ID BE RELUCTANT TO SAY THAT YOU HAVENT EVEN BEGUN TO LEARN HOW TO GROW……I WISH ONE OF YOU YOUNG FELLAS WHO KNOW HOW TO MAKE VIDEOS, WOULD DO A TRUE DOCU-SERIES OF ME, TEACHING THE COMMUNITY, HOW TO PROPERLY MIX NUTES…..AND THAT MIX BEING YOUR CONCENTRATE MIX….FROM THAT , YOU MIX YOUR FEED FOR THE DAY IN ACCORDANCE TO THE WEEK YOU ARE ON…..EVERY NUTRIENT LINE HAS AN EXACT FEED CHART AND SCHEDUAL…..EXACTLY WHAT IS SAYS ON BOTTLE, IS EXACTLY HOW YOUR CONCENTRATE SHOULD BE MIXED…..PLAIN WATER, IS WHAT YOU CUT YOUR CONCENTRATE WITH , TO GET IT TO THE PROPER EC/PPM….ONCE YOU GIT THE STRENGTH RIGHT FOR THE WEEK YOU ARE ON,…..THEN , YOU PH YOUR FEED MIX…..HYDRO IS 5.7…..SOIL IS 6.4…..ALWAYS…..THIS IS THE MOST OPTIMAL PH FOR ALL CANNABISS PLANTS……AS I SAID 37 YRS IVE BEEN GROWING AND I NEVER STOP LEARNING MORE AND MORE EACH AND EVERY DAY….
this is the young grower brain I like and respect , I love the fact he's doing it on the less is more even environmentally . I personally have gone backwards with my set up and am getting same results from 3 years ago when having a fully dialled in system and fully automated
I've spent the last year & half trying to grow organically & tbh failed most of the time & its pot size which is the overall issue , unless you are doing 10 gal pots I cant see how it can work
Im gonna try a mix of both.. the synganic route as i have 5 gal pots .
good discussion & some good thoughts too .
Bottles are for babies, powdered fertilizer FTW. Paying for water is for suckers. You're asking for pests bringing in manure and other organic crap that bugs love
Synthetic is better…change my mind.
Definitely one of my favorite guests. Seems like a cool dude.
I do my tea's da same way stir it around with a stick,, no problem at all,, glad am not da only one ,,lol
I swear man this guy started out exactly how I did I fukd so much shit up its not funny but when I found organics and auto pots I was off to the races I learned alot about organics on your show mr grow it well great episode keep em coming 💯
Watch your powdery mildew man
Chris thank you for keeping your show on a great track , I mean lots of podcast focus is different than I like but you keep it fresh by show casing small at home growing! That’s what I would say 80% of new growers are very small at home growers keep up the great work 💜💪🏻 maybe try getting small at home breeder/chuckers lol growers love🌱
Great Episode
15gal is the sweet spot with organic. For a single auto
Re: concentrations. My friend got a clone from someone and grew the plant, with no previous knowledge, in his back yard, in Coco coir, fed it every day with strong household ferts. In his back yard. Outdoor. Against all rules, harvested three times more than another friend who followed the instructions and did it in a controlled climate.
I.hear so much about the watering schedule. Do not underwater, do not overwater. Fair enough. But the yield starts to shrink more due to the underwatering because it seems to happen more frequently. Watch the plants closely and don't let them go thirsty. They will apply I.
I switched to organics this past year …..i like it out door ….but…..indoor synthetics are best to avoid pests in my personal opinion im currently doing my last run in botanicare nutes ….in hydro …..but next run im going back into using the flora nova series by gh …its simple its effective i can run sterile use bleach or hydrogen peroxide and not have to worry about keeping microbes alive …i need simplicity when im breeding strains
All that ph crap is crap. 5 to 7.5 and your fine in organic. Been doing it for years
Chris, I also have 3 cats. Started with one then rescued two. Changed my first cat's personality a lot. She's a grumpy old beeyitch these days. All she wants to do is look out the window and fight with the other cats.
Organic using Gaia Greens ..I must try some of that power bloom next …thanks!!
I’ll NEVER go back to bottle/salt synthetic growing. ORGANICS FTW
I’ve watched many of your videos. Very informative. Side note 62 years old. I’m very old school / relearning with organic. In the 70s I was using HPS 1000 watts in a 12 X 12 on we called sun trackers ran 24 in fan to cool room. Up to date I run 2 electric sky V 300 and 2 of the V3 180 and earth dust. Now the other reason for my post was that you had mentioned cover crop in organic grow. You may like my idea go to your hardware box store and get the green or it may be blue it’s the generic air filter you cut to size. I cut the size of the top of the pot. And then I make a cut half way and cut a hole in the center of the filter and lay over the soil. It help keep the soil moist and when you water it helps spread more evenly. I am as anal about growing as one person could be If you try please let me know what you think
190$ for a 20% increase …. you can't not afford this lol
Bro get a air stone ….
Bro organic all day
Is it good to bottom feed with liquid organic fertilizers using the octopod system?
