Annuals are among the easiest of flowers to grow. Keep them in tip-top condition to help them stay healthy and produce bright blooms. See our full guide to learn the best way to keep your annuals flowering: http://thd.co/2kT71VX

Your perennials will bloom year after year, saving you from planting new flowers every year. Perennials typically have a shorter blooming season than annuals, ranging from two to three weeks, depending on the type of flower. Plant flowers that bloom early, mid-season and late together for a full season of color. See our full guide to learn more about perennials: http://thd.co/2kMwmyo

Should you use annuals or perennials in your garden? Here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing your plants.

An annual is a plant that lives for just one season. It sprouts, flowers, sets seed and dies and must be planted annually. There are exceptions.

Sometimes plants that technically are perennials or even shrubs in warm climates are treated as annuals in colder climates.

Annuals produce beautifully colored flowers that can last a long time. Examples of annuals are geraniums, impatiens, pansies and petunias.

Perennials are plants that grow year after year. Some die back to the ground in the winter and some will last several seasons but eventually need to be replanted.

Perennials are generally more expensive than annuals, but give great return on investment.

Here’s a simple tip for remembering the difference: a sports team that is a ‘perennial’ favorite is one that comes back strong year after year.

Examples of perennials are phlox, daylilies, black-eyed Susan and daisies.

Planting both annuals and perennials in your garden can help ensure color throughout the season.
