We aren’t always successful growing Brussels Sprouts, but we were this year! We changed a few things with our growing technique for this tricky vegetable in the backyard garden. Join us to hear what we did different this year that contributed to a successful Brussels Sprouts harvest.
We’ll also be harvesting our red cabbage and moving our chicken tractor to a new plot with a lush cover crop for the chickens to eat. We’ll tell you why the chicken tractor has been such a vital part of our backyard gardening plan so far and why it will continue to be a valuable technique for our backyard garden going forward.

I live in a cool climate and I can’t grow Brussel sprouts for the life of me. I swear every aphid in the state hot foots it to my garden every time I plant Brussel sprouts.
This is great I had a few brussell sprouts I want to put in
The great thing about vegetables it that, since they are so short lived, you can always try again in a year or less. Spring seems to have sprung here in FL, but, like you, I'm resisting the urge to plant early and loose the crop.
I have started brussel spouts they will go in the ground in a few weeks.
Still waiting to see the farmstand
You have a lot of land
I haven’t been successful with Brussel sprouts but I have taters breaking the ground
I accidentally grew Brussels sprouts one year when I bought a 6 pack labeled broccoli. I think Brussels sprouts are the most nasty veggies on the face of the planet so imagine my surprise when I had waist high plants that developed sprouts and not broccoli, lol (we are in California). I cut them down and fed them to the chickens, lol.
HEY TRAVIS! Seeing your fertilizer injector out there, does it have to be at your faucet or can u hool it up at the plot at end of hose? Thanks
Travis I have a question about my cauliflower? So I think I bought the self blanching ones but not positive and I have several little heads on them do I need to Blanche them Travis? So I have a broccoli left and about 4 cauliflowers and 2 cabbages. One of the red acre cabbage got frost bit don't know if it will over come it.
Red Express has been a good producer for me in the past in zone 7a
"Baby Red Cabbage!" That's some good MARKETING, lol! But that's why I tell people don't be 'disappointed' with TINY potatoes… they sell too! If they're THIN SKINNED, they work in casseroles and stews. Very little clean up and just throw them in the pot! The extra large ones are sold as 'Baking Potatoes'. Some households really don't need a bigger head of cabbage or lettuce or whatever!
Could you add multiple sets of wheels (front and back) so you have one on each corner of the tractor? Would that make moving it easier on those long moves?
I live in New York and I suck at Brussels. I think I need to feed them way more. Im gunna try that I already trim the lower leaves and I eat them bc they are delicious
Man, you are a busy young man👍
I have a little issue growing them too. But it is the challenge that makes it fun.
I absolutely LOVE Brussel Sprouts. But, I have been unsuccessful trying to grow them. I'm in 7b. You're in like 9, right? YOU give me hope!! This year would have been a perfect year to grow them here but, I didn't bother because of passed failures. If I had a crystal ball and could truly predict weather (unlike the highly paid lying weather people) I could do it. LOL Congrats on some decent Brussel Sprouts. I MUST try harder to get it right!!
Love this video, as always! The first year I grew Brussels sprouts, they were awesome! I had five or six plants (I lived alone then) and the stalks were tall and the sprouts were large and full. The second and succeeding years, I grew tall stalks that had balloons attached – the outer leaves grew well, but the spouts never filled out. I moved since then and haven't grown them again, but with them being $3 a pound at the grocery store and needing three pounds at a time (I live with my daughter and her family, and every one of the nine of us loves sprouts), I'm seriously thinking about trying them again this summer!
7 minutes into this video wondering where the brussel sprouts are 😕🤔
We love to ribbon cut and cook the brussel sprout leaves with olive oil, butter and navy beans. Really delicious!
You have some lucky chickens 🐔 they eat healthy
My Brussels sprouts are slow growing. Was yours? I'm in zone 9b planted them in early January -end of December.
Try saracha and honey on sautéed Brussel sprouts
If you want them to lay more consistent give them some layer feed it will help.
So glad you care about your chickens ♡
I'm in south-central Indiana and I haven't yet grown a great Brussel but I will keep trying. They get tall but not productive. So I've at least harvested some leaves from them
glad I found this I have been trying to grow brussel sprouts for a few years. glad some one else in the south grows them
