Today we’re finishing planting our allium plot where we have several different varieties of onions and garlic planted. We’ll be planting two varieties of onions that we’ve never grown in the past — Georgia Boy and White Phantom. We’ll discuss the struggle of keeping onions weed free in the early stages of growth, and what we’ve been doing to try and win the weed battle.
We’ll also be planting more garlic alongside the elephant garlic we planted a couple weeks ago. We’ll talk about how we have to treat softneck garlic differently than elephant garlic and the tips and tricks we used last year to ensure we were successful when growing it for the first time.

Awesome vid. Thanks lazy dog. I appreciate all you put into this channel. I agree on the straw mulch for sure
can't say anything else. just bowing my head out of respect, here!
We are expecting 1.5" to 2.0" of rain this week. Maybe it'll wash the worst parts of California away. Pulled out the 20×20 tarps to cover the citrus, as we are expecting temps in the mid to high 20s. Not sure if I'll need to put a heat source under the tarps at this point.
Now that we have to call monkeypox mpox, I guess we'll need to call pigweed pweed.

I am doing garlic for the third time. I'm taking it seriously this time. Hopefully it will do well.
Good video on garlic, think I'll try pine straw on the elephant garlic. Wish us LSU fans luck this weekend 😬!!!✌🏻
I have tons of chick weed and I feed all I can to the chickens. There's no getting rid of it, so I use it for fodder. Unlike you I don't have the space for cover crops unless I take away the huge run for the chickens. I have 26 chickens and they need space so there's no issues with pecking and bullying. They have a 10/20 coop and they are only in it to sleep and lay eggs. I'm impressed with the agrothrive and the fish emulsion. I'm also adding nitrogen from my chickens to the nitrogen loving plants. My onions are looking great and I should be getting some nice heads on my cabbage soon.
I didn't mark my onions, so I don't know what's growing where, except for the red onions. I think I planted red creole, but I'm not sure about that either lol.
Wife surprised me with a mess of garlic. unfortunately it was hard neck. I'm zone 9b Texas coast. It's a beautiful purple garlic grown out of the Mesa central region of Mexico.I figured it might be something special so I let it sit 6 weeks in fridge.amended with chicken run compost and NS8-5-5. In ground 6 days and it's already up and running so I'm hopeful it'll turn out
way up here in zone 3 where only hardneck can survive winter egyption walking onions got planted with the garlic a couple months ago, its gona be a long wile b4 any thing green pops up lol.
What is the barb size in mm foe the drip tape? I bought hoss originally and it's 1/4 barb. Drip depot has MM sizes. Which to get, 3.6mm or 7.0mm? This is for row starts.
Have you thought about using leaf mulch on one of your plots? I enjoy your channel.
Peas and beans don’t do well with alliums.
Been watching the 30 or 60 inch wide rows of corn with alfalfa growing in between and was wondering i f you planted corn like that with chicken tunnels over a cover crop , if that would be more productive ? Heads up on peeling Garlic cloves , put them into a hard bowl and cover with plate and give it the old shaka shaka as Chef John would say they will all be peeled .
I saw something you might like from a English garden Channel take A empty toilet roll snip the end and fold over plant your seed in it and them just plant the whole roll in the ground .
hard neck is my favorite stronger flavor and more consistent clove size and of course scapes for early harvest if you run out of bulbs
Chickweed is edible, The whole plant, except the roots, is delicious. Eaten raw, it tastes like corn-on-the-cob, or like cornsilk. Cooked, it's more like spinach. Always chop the entire plant, except the roots, into bite-sized pieces before using it. Try it you might like it. But get the right one not the poisonous kind. It's an herb.
I’ve noticed about a 2-3 week difference between your Zone and mine in 9a Northwest Florida. My Texas DP Sweets and Texas DP White (that’s what they call em’) are about two weeks behind yours. I feel I can get my onions in the ground by the 1st or second week of December and be alright. Garlic is in the fridge too.
Kudzu ! Georgians know all about it. I don't have Kudzu but it's smaller cousin, Creeping Charlie, except for a smaller scale it demonstrates the exact same caricature as Kudzu. For those new to it, prepare for Battle.
Y-T has decided today to completely change how we're acknowledged in our comments, going as far as changing parts of my personnel page. Luckily I've a name that's most definitely un-common, except for here. As my boys in REO says "Role with the Changes".
Any room in the Dream Garden for some Garlic.
Thanks! Had to change my screen name today (???), which isn't a problem because my real name is my screen name, but it is now a bit different.
I do have all my onions, leeks and garlic planted in the ground. I've also started some more onion and leek seeds about a week ago. I'm trying to extend my harvest window so I will have slicing onions for a longer period, and I try to grow leek all year long.
Could you do a video on how you keep your freezer organized…you reference storing veggies so often. Seems my freezers get stuff in them that I forget about and it goes bad. I really appreciate your videos and instruction
I gave up on straw mulch. The straw here is usually oat and is always full of unseen seeds. It's too much battle when the all pop up. I switched to pine shavings and it seems to work pretty good.
I think you may be in for disappointment by planting the garlic willy-nilly instead of point up. You may have misshapen or smaller bulbs. We will see.
Haven’t talked at ya in a looooong time trav! The wife and I started a new business so I been crazy busy! God bless
Plant some parsley and cilantro in that space. My oregano does good in winter(I think it's Greek but not sure), sage does good too. Mint does great in winter though it's highly invasive, I only grow it in pots. I would transplant these this time of year if you can find them. I have gone to the grocery store before and bought a few bunches of "live" herbs, planted them and they did great if it comes to that. Rosemary also does well in winter but it's a perennial. Notice I'm just talking about herbs…I don't really know what else to plant in late fall that's not a perennial and that you might be able to find transplants for. I have direct seeded spring onions(scallions) in winter and they did great. I'm in zone 8.
QUESTION?? Elephant Garlic is a biennial. I grow mine for 2 winters to get a big head of cloves, I only harvest plants that have bloomed. Do you get a head with cloves after 1 year or just a round onion like bulb? Do you wait till the plants bloom? I have permanent beds, or just places where it always grows (south side of trees) when it blooms I cut the stalks off and when the plants start to die I only harvest the ones with cut stalks.
Why the sunglasses?
I bet the clove direction does matter. I have never experimented with it but the roots are going to grow towards the surface of the the soil. Time will tell. Good luck
So I can put pine needles on my garlic? I’m in central Texas
I'm sure you're expecting Georgia boy to grow better than Alabama boy. 🤣 I won't be starting onion seeds until Christmas time.
go tigers! I hope the game will at least be entertaining! looks like you are gonna need only one dawg bucket!
travis I always your videos! Most of my garlic is already coming up! My onions are also taking off. Tks for the advice on using pine straw!
Check out Danny's latest video on 'Deep South Homestead' titled 'WARNING! – Our LIVES Were Put at RISK'. If my understanding is correct, people are registering their property as a public garden to get food from on a USDA website. You don't want people just showing up to pick food off of your property.
Travis I tried hard neck once will not grow again doesn't store very long you have to use it quick
I have my garlic in the fridge for awhile now thanks to your videos. Need to get it in the ground soon.
