Having lived on a self-sufficient homestead in the west of Ireland for 6 years it’s time to ask the ultimate question: does Ireland have the right climate for growing food and living off-grid, and if not, where might be better? Let’s take a closer look (expect graphs).

  1. Good to see you are filming again Daniel! I have been squirreling away every scrap of compost for my garden, and it's on it's way back after 11 years of neglect! I've learned so much from you, and the hardiness zones have always been confounding for me to apply in my humble efforts. I do want to add though, that though I know some fear we are headed for global destruction through overheating, I have lived long enough to remember in the 70s when the news sent everyone into a panic that we would all freeze and go into a second ICE AGE. We didn't. And later, in college I learned warm and cold eras are cyclical and normal as the Earth travels around the sun. There are some years we are closer to the sun in our orbit than other years, and it will cycle back again. I am a bit angry that the media and special interest groups selectively report and use fear to manipulate people. I have also learned after falling for these reports over the years and tending to be a worrier, that the only reliable source of information is God. I know others have their own opinions, but what I read described in the Bible makes sense and has held true for millenia. And it only makes sense that the Entity that designed the Earth and all of us living on it would be the best reference to get a handle on things. And as I see people set on edge in needless fear, the words of Genesis 8:22 came to my mind "While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, night and day shall not cease." It also says, one day the world WILL be destroyed and burn up, but it won't be global warming caused by man's carelessness per the earth, but carelessness toward God. Then He will restore it back to the way He had it in the beginning. No death, no weeds, no meaness between people.

  2. North Ontario, Canada. In a specific microclimate.
Deer, moose, Elk and wolves….and not too many towns. No heavy industry, no water pollution.
Very very relaxed rules on setting up an organic permaculture farm.
That's my go-to off grid place.

  3. Irish farmer to his wife – ‘I think that Englishman has been playing with our donkeys again’. Wife – ‘to be sure but he’s a single man let him be’

  4. Interesting topic which I’ve also thought about myself. I had the same conclusion as for the ideal place, on paper, being northern Spain. Recently I’ve been thinking about micro climates. For instance in places with lots of elevation changes, maybe you could be able to adjust the overall equation by going a bit higher. Geopolitics also come to play because places like the northern coast or Turkey could be nice but then issues in governance create the kind of instability that removes it from the competition.

  5. Well, I look forward to have a calendar for 2024 then. I look the ideia of you producing a a calendar that we can print ourselves and still support your efforts.

  6. Glad to see you back! For a 2023 Calendar, you could definitely offer a Printable PDF version that you can sell through a platform like Gumroad or even Etsy instead of shipping a physical copy. 😊

  7. I was, in fact, wondering where you were! This was a great vid — such a cogent explanation of climate needs for self-sufficiency. Interspersed with harvesting veg and feeding the pigs and getting chewed by the donkeys — what fun.
