The Portland Japanese Garden is world-renowned for its beauty and design. For many, it’s considered a living work of art. There are people who dedicate their lives to its care, both volunteers and staff at the garden.
Hugo Torii was recently named the next curator of the garden and the 10th since the garden was founded in the 1960s. He is taking over from chief garden curator Sadafumi Uchiyama.
“It’s a great profession, really, to be in the garden to see people enjoy the garden,” said Torii. “One of my responsibilities is really to see the sustainability of the garden.”
Hugo will oversee the staff of gardeners and volunteers as they work to keep the garden true to its design, as well as grow and adapt it to needs of the future.
“I think creating gardens takes a lot of time and we see things in a longer timeframe. And it’s important that we keep on learning because this vision can evolve and change to do the demands of the time.”
