Join History Hit presenter Alice Loxton as she discovers the secrets of Stourhead, one of the most fascinating country houses in the world. As well as providing the setting for perhaps the most famous scene in Pride & Prejudice, the Stourhead estate has a storied history of its own.

Once upon a time, this house was at the forefront of art, of design, of architecture of interiors. We’re talking big, bold new ideas which had never been done before. This place is a hub of creativity, of experimentation. And once more, it’s had a pretty dramatic past, peppered with outrageous parties, terrible tragedy and even a visit of King Alfred the Great. Hold onto your hats, because there’s a lot of history to take in!

  1. Fascinating stuff! May I recommend "Geat and Maethild", a recent upload on the Northworthy Sagas and Stories channel here on YouTube.

  2. "There's nothing intellectual in wandering around Italy in a big shirt trying to get laid!" Edmund Blackadder

  3. Absolutely love visiting Stourhead. Especially in the Autumn because of the leaf colour.

  4. Alice is not just a passionate historian but also a movie start and concert pianist!

  5. That was great! One question: was that bridge paved with grass? Is that unique or an English thing? I'm American and have never seen that before and am curious.

  6. Great! Also v much enjoyed the short vids last month.. I liked the choices of music, those Vivaldi string concertos are ace. Whilst on subject, thanks for the Mozart.. Nice one Alice. 🌟👍

  7. so jaw-dropping fabulous. i loved that place when i lived in britain. each visit you found something new. the grotto has to be my favourite, though.

  8. I kept trying to work out where I’d seen the temple structure, and I thought that it was from an episode of Poirot . ❤ thanks for the info, I love these videos.
