In this week’s video I am laying the preparations for my new container garden and also giving it a name. The gravel area on the east side of the property was originally earmarked for a future dry garden. I usually give a few choice plants a trial in a new area to check for sun, shade and microclimates but when I started to actually plant the plants I found that there were huge areas with over 8 inches of gravel and others with less than an inch and underneath all of it the thickest landscape fabric I have ever seen. So out the window went the idea of a dry garden – one thing is dry poor soil and another is no soil. So I did a big rethink and decided to create a container garden with a Spanish theme. So I want to have several groupings of terracotta pots planted with different plants depending on the light and then in each group include ceramic pottery from different areas of Spain: Cordoba (Andalucía – southern Spain), Mediterranean from the coastal areas and Talavera from Talavera de la Reina in the centre of Spain.
I want this garden to be ready for planting for this coming spring so I need to get things ready. Today is phase 1. Trimming back the hedge, levelling the border (the only non-gravel area) and laying landscape fabric to keep weeds and ivy trailers at bay until I can bring in some new gravel to match the existing one. I also choose the name for this future garden and I would like to take a moment to thank all of you for the fantastic suggestions. I chose 3 possible names that I really liked and let Kenya the Fox Red Working Labrador do the choosing. I will be doing updates but I am so happy that this area is now moving forward.
