Winter in Alaska is never a dull season, this upcoming year we will be taking on a particularly challenging task of building a large Quonset hut shop at our new property. Although there is a tremendous amount of preparing to be done, we are happy to have this delivery completed and get to enjoy a few relaxing days at the cabin.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure ๐

You guys have the most amazing shots. Like the tires going through the snow and even the closeup of the English muffin. Iโm always in awe!
Watching you guys brings so much peace to me. Hopefully one day I can have a partner that would love to make a life similar to how you both live. God bless
Are you guys eventually permanently moving over there? It looks like a colder place so could be more difficult to grow stuff I guess. But also loads more space by the looks of it.
Good luck on the build. Currently building my 40×60โ Quonset and trying to get finished before winter hits here in Indiana. My tips:
-pay someone to do concrete prep and pour, I did mine and it took forever cause I was only working nights and weekends without much help. Rain flooded foundation so many times and weather kept holding up foundation work.
-when building the arches make sure you use the provided โstory boardโ angle iron pieces to keep the ribs correct distance apart. Got 12 panels in on mine yesterday and kept having issues getting bolt holes to line up and then checked dims and realized top of arch was growing and bowing out front to back out of vertical square. Taking forever to unbolt and loosen ribs enough to come back and get them to correct offset to pull bldg back into square. Killed a whole day yesterday and still more rework.
-minimum of a 2 person job. Canโt hold and align and bolt together by yourself. Scissor lift is a must, have been putting them up straight and curve on both sides, then short on one side and long on other then both top pieces together on ground and lifting up into position. Working well but kinda slow. Would like to try to build whole arch on ground and lift into place to see if itโs any quicker but donโt have a crane. Taking us about 1-1.5hrs per arch. 30 arches total for 40×60 and I have 15 left so another 20-30 hrs in arches and more for end panels and doors.
-just realizing spray foam is going to be a must. Frosted last night and sun today heats up the metal and cause frost to melt and essentially makes it rain on the inside and would get all of your stuff wet. Hope it gets better when I have the whole place enclosed but not sure.
For anyone still reading:
Steel master 40×60 19โ tall S model $35,000
Concrete I did myself but $5K materials (rebar, mesh foam, pex), $24,000 contractor just to put up form boards and pour/finish. Ask me any other questions, I have a cost tracker if you are curious.
Good luck! Great structures from what I can tell. Happy building.
You should get sponsored by EcoFlow generators. I hear they are great! It's electric but supposed to hold charge for a very long time.
Maybe that heater under the floor was used to keep the crawlspace heated if someone wasn't there for days or weeks at a time in the cold winter. Because that's what I do when I'm down at my primary home and not at my cabin.
Coming from a truckers daughter. You should always put a twist in ur straps. The vibration on them will damage them too.
I don't know much about severe winter like y'all have, but my mind immediately went to a place to store your canned goods that you put up every year. Don't know if it would get too cold in winter, or too hot in summer, but maybe it's something that would work for y'all?? Love your
Travel's and adventures. Stay safe!
WOW… I need to find out how to make money from youtube videos. Nice cabin and land….
I grew up in Fairbanks- you couldn't pay me to live in Alaska again. Too dark, to cold, to much snow.
Below frost level, ground temperature in most parts of the world is between 45 and 60 degrees. With a basement or stem wall foundation with sufficient footing depth, the house above insulates well enough to maintain temperature.
So just a recommendation, donโt get the full sized firman. I had one and it was terrible. Burned oil like crazy and only lasted about 30 hours. Actually I had 2 of them. I also have the smaller 2000 watt firman which has been nice. As far as a full sized generator Iโd recommend the predator 9500 watt. I live off grid in northern Arizona and itโs been great.
Reluctantly started watching your videos with my husband. I too am now hooked! While I know the videos are carefully planned and edited, you cannot fake hard work, determination and perseverance. I have admiration for you both. I grew up working very hard, so I appreciate your efforts. My dad was a master gardener and he would've loved the varieties of vegetables you grow. I still have his seed catalogs and his notebooks he carefully kept about the current crops he had planted in the greenhouse.
Of course I am curious about your personal lives…Any children in your future? Is faith an important part of your lives? You seem to get along so well and treat each other respectfully. You treat your pets with great care as well. I pray you stay well and healthy in your endeavors and adventures. โค๏ธ
So brave!!!!
Another great video! Question and not sure if this has already been answered or explained but are planning on moving to this cabin permanently? Seems like an awesome spot!
Hey homesteaders! nice video, I always carry a 30 amp to 20 amp adapter when rving, looks like that would have worked with your generator shed. You two are very careful and plan out all your endeavors… I guess in Ak. if you didn't you would be statistic added to Ak.'s 6,000 missing persons or wanna be mountain men/women. Your gardening knowledge is excellent, I think that is more important than the meat production and hunting. Best of luck.
Wow , I so enjoy watching your guys videos, can't can't wait to see your new property come to life , you two will have that done so awesome ,such a great team / couple all the best to you
When you get some used car tires cut some sections across the face of the tires to put overthe metal edges and the straps on top. Will save your straps.
I can't wait to see what you are going to do on the new property. Specifically the garden. Good luck with the move. Waiting for all the new videos
You two are a great team! Love this channelโฆ HIT THE SUB AND LIKE BUTTONS PLEASE!
Hi guys, love you vids. lived in the interior of AK for a lot of years. Be really careful with the gasoline. If the temp is 22 below so is the liquid gas, wear gloves when you can, a little spill will really freeze burn you. All the best!
Boy, you two are great. Well done.
Still selling the calendar?
I was just reading so many comments about you guys they are heartwarming and so true โ๏ธโ๏ธ I do so enjoy watching everyone of your Episodes๐ I do have snow where I live in the winter but with watching โ๏ธ this one โ๏ธI was happy to be in my lounge chair wrapped up in a blanketโ๏ธโ๏ธโค๏ธ๐ต๐ป
you guys are amazing
I love how the one dog lays down to eat like a king in the old Roman era.
Could you use that crawl space as a place to store potatoes and canned goods
Youโre such an amazing couple. Too bad this country doesnโt have more like you.
Iโm so frigginโ jealous of you guys. You deserve everything you e got, and then some. Your content is some of the best on YouTube!
My man, do not ever, I mean ever, be mean to that girl. Always be kind, respectful and appreciatetive to her. Girles/ women like her are few and far between, she is worth her weight in gold. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
Is the new place near fox alaska?
you guys make me forget the world..kudos
Funny when one gives the temps w/o saying below or aboven zeroโฆone just expects below!!
Love the scenery! I'm looking forward to seeing how you develop the new property! I'm curious if you will have a bigger garden and greenhouses as well as another orchard and of course more chickens? A big herb garden would definitely be a must! Definitely more room for a "root cellar". I'm so happy for both of you!!!
That weird music it too difficult to listen to
Don't lose sight of "Simple" Alaska… Three properties, alot of expensive gear and vehicles, tons of building material purchases… Very happy for you for sure, but don't stray far from how you got there. Stay well. Merry Christmas! If I ever visit my friends in the Village of North Pole I'll drive the extra distance and buy you both some coffee…
Great video as always. How far away is your cabin at the lake from your newest property?
The two of you work so well together!
I'm new here so I don't know your experience with these steel buildings, but if you are able to ratchet those pieces to the ground or to those pallets that they are on, you ought to do so. Any wind will destroy them by blowing them all over the place. If you cover them with a tarp, it needs to be a really heavy one.
