In today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share a common tool that is my secret weapon for resting garden beds during winter or in between plantings. This garden hack will protect your soil, prevent weeds and increase the rate at which you can turn over your garden bed during the growing season and off season!
This garden tip works for raised bed gardening and earth bed gardening. I use this trick in my raised bed garden to improve soil health and increase the composting rate. This also works to quickly turn kitchen scraps into compost if you amend your soil with kitchen waste like I do.
If you have questions about how to rest garden beds off season, need help growing a vegetable garden or growing fruit trees, want tips for gardening for beginners, want to know about the things I grow in my garden, are looking for more gardening tips and tricks and “garden hacks” like this, have questions about vegetable gardening and organic gardening in general, or want to share some DIY and “how to” garden tips and gardening hacks of your own, please ask in the Comments below!

We tarp areas of our yard to stop weeds from growing. I never thought about it for my garden beds. THANKS
That's a great idea ! I do something similar to my large planting pots . And I do put compost under from time to time .
Thank you, that make really good sense. I will incorporate this into my garden here in DFW Texas.
THANK YOU SIR. GREAT INFORMATION. GLAD YOU REMIND US OF THINGS TO DO ALSO. WE WILL DEFINITELY BE DOING THIS FOR SPRING GARDEN. NEVER KNEW THIS. FATHER GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY IN JESUS NAME 🙏
I think your idea is good but don’t understand why a mulch layer cools vs warms the soil. That does not seem to make sense because I apply mulch to some of my beds to keep canna bulbs, elephant ears and bananas to protect them from cold and not dying. Can you help explain I would love to understand your point
I read that tarping can be a good option however we have problems here in 5b/6a when I do so: increased roly poly bugs, mold if too wet when covered, soil drying out, and the risk of the cover blowing off. I've had better results with a thick layer of leaves. To prevent them from blowing off I either water it down after application or top them with scoops of old soil from planters I empty late fall. Some leaves remain in the spring so I use it as a mulch for spring plant starts. By summer it's virtually all composted and our soil hasn't dried out in the interim.
I did this on one of my beds after you suggested it! I poked some holes in it though to let rain water in and a little air flow. Worked great!!!
