π I grow 800 – 1000 onions every year π Onions are a stable in our pantry and we use all the onion we can grow every single year π Over the years I tried out several different methods, and I now have my βonion-gameβ down for sure π
π©βπΎ Here are a few of my best practices with onions –
βοΈ I much prefer growing union from seed – the onion grow bigger and are much less prone to disease and running to seed π
βοΈ I plant out late March to early April – onion grown from seed tolerate the occasional freezing temps without running to seed
βοΈ I try not to let the onion dry out and a few times during growth I feed with a nitrogen heavy natural fertilizer such as chicken manure π
βοΈAll alliums have to be protected by insect netting where I live due to the allium leaf miner, which has become more and more common over the last few years here in Northern Europe. Also blight can be devastating for the onion crop, but since growing my onion from seed rather than sets, I have not suffered from this quite devastating disease π€
π Bonus info – you can be sowing onion all year for a year round supply of spring onion ππ§ π€
π©βπΎ Put any βoniony questionsβ in the comments and Happy onion growing friends ππ
