Gardening is part science, part trial and error and part magic. Don't be afraid to "just go for it" and don't let a failure deter you. Even the best gardeners have failures; it's all part of the learning curve.
Great start 👍
Thanks for continuing to help others.
I am up north of PNW area. It is not too cold yet but still can get snow and frost. Not much sunlight now so my window garden is very slow.
Excellent information and analysis. Thank you Chris.
Growing sprouts constantly in the kitchen. They don't need special lights or care and add a good bit of vitamins and can be used endlessly. I start a batch about every 4 days or so. Be blessed all 🌻🍄
You know a good prep is alcohol… we need to learn to make hooch so we can barter with it.
Something to look into is edibility of plants in question. For example, another commenter (Anime Saved My Life) commented that radish seed pods are edible. The leaves are as well and have a spicy flavor akin to mustard greens. Broccoli leaves and stems can be eaten. Brussels Sprouts leaves, cauliflour leaves, rutabaga leaves – all edible. Those who grow beets know the greens are edible and are very similar to chard. There is a variety of beet called Lutz that produces massive delicious roots and succulent leaves. Vining squash plants are edible and the tender vine tips are eaten in some cultures, as are sweet potato vines.
So research your food crops and find out just how much of the plants are edible. You may be able to increase your food produced by 50% or more just by eating other parts of the plant.
Just adding in a bit with the partial or low sun. That can also be created by the what is being grown since something like a bush tomato plant can get dwarfed and 'sunned out' by neighboring pole beans, cucumbers, even more tomatoes and the like. Just not evident until the climbers are up and climbing. Since you asked how I might know, imagine a pot of Dill that gets huge and then after bragging on that, yah, the radish variety is supposed to get golf ball sized, but these pea sized ones are pretty intense…
I used to watch all the doom spreading stuff and the cool gun guy things and all that….. now this is more what I am interested in. Thanks for actual advice and usable information Kris. It’s much appreciated.
I just don't have a green thumb. For me, if it grows, it's a weed. If it dies, it's a plant. LOL

Excellent video thank you sir
Gardening in Miami is not easy.. my plants died every time the torrential rains come and flood my backyard… I’m done .
Good info, im, im a good gardener, ive seed banks , what i think is actually a priority over, how to grow, vs what is available for free in nature.
And i highlight this as, people need to learn NOW while they still have google buy books.
The point is, walmart wasnt around in 1242 bc
Soil vs dirt – just one of many points that indicate you have done your research. 👍
Glad to see you are getting all the info together 😊 I urge everyone if you are looking to purchase seeds I would do so as soon as they are available online. Ideally now through new years. I don't know how stocked seed companies are going to be for next spring.
If you grow edible peppers (both bell and capsicum) know that the leaves are edible and make a good salad addition. Also the leaves from both bush and pole beans are edible and can be added to salads or lightly sautéed. As other commenters have pointed out on a variety of foods; foods that have multiple edible parts will give you a better nutrient return for your space and time.
I'm still harvesting blue kale from my outside container and small garden; even AFTER a snow storm. Fresh garden greens just before December in Ontario. Amazing! And no bug holes.
No offense to any of you preppers but ALL y’all been screaming food shortages for YEARS and we’ve yet to see any real food shortages. I’m starting to think you guys thrive off of other ppls fears
Living on several acres in rural iowa. While that’s an advantage the land was mono cropped for years. Getting it back to being able to grow food is going to take a couple of years.
Fantastic!! Thank you!!!
people Been saying this since 2020.
Why anyone would purposely move in a HOA area now-a-days is just insane.
Great video 👍
The amount of "space" it takes to be close to self sufficient growing your own food is way beyond a small space garden.
Could I suggest the roof?
After a serious SHTF event who's going to say "no"?
But I believe a large flat roof could supply a lot of food for people with a well organized growing area. You know, depending on water.
Then there's the fertilizer.
Mark my words, as soon as "humanure" becomes valuable, the poor will be born without assholes. … My bad.
Good luck.
As an urban apartment dweller Kratky hydroponics and foraging won't make you food independent. What it will do is greatly supplement your diet with higher quality food at a much lower cost. You will be much less dependent on the food supply chain.
My balcony is awful for growing plants, no sunlight and small space, AND squirrels. Now an indoor grow tent with an aeroponics system is how I’m approaching this issue. I’ve also been cultivating mushrooms for over a decade and that is gonna be in tandem with the aeroponics 🙏🏽
Some oyster mushrooms can put off several “wet” pounds of mushrooms for a single bag of bulk substrate. Others grow from wood. Add in that i’ve got a literal ton of liquid propane to ensure I can sterilize substrate. I think we’ll be able to make it a lil’ while barring some ultra-ill fortune
Great information! Thanks for all your hard work! Very helpful!
Use a lot of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite to make your soil light and not collapse your balcony. Use lots of Miracle-Gro or similar fertilizer to give your plants the elements they need. Light, water, and warmth do most of the rest. The more peat moss and the less dirt, the fewer the root diseases.
When I was young, I asked to garden an elderly lady's yard for a share of vegetables. Her daughter interviewed me, and I shared for years until I bought a place.
After I moved to Seattle, I gardened in my son's yard for all 5 of us. The neighbor's kid visited every day and I gave them snackies (veg). Their dad came over to apologize, so I gave him a snack. He offered me his yard too and tilled it for me. Doubled my garden! And eaters 😉
Well done buddy. All useful stuff and gives useful help rather than fear-stoking. Make them strong brother!
Thank you for this video Kris. I’m very limited currently at my home.
I know that my comment is not practical information to folks with apartment type dwelling but here goes.
I discovered that growing a tree that bears fruit/nuts is better than planting a garden.
The tree gives more produce that can be turned into many things from jams, fruit leathers, fruit butters, frozen for cobblers, and even sold to your community for a monetary gain.
I have:
1 Meyer lemon
1 Peach
2 plums, 2 pear,
1 fig
Every year I learn more and more about my soil and natural pesticides.
Just saying ……
I live in Jersey and I ordered a soil kit from my local college that offers services to help detect deficiencies in the soil and what to buy to remove the problems.
Great service.
Lol. Want truth??… if you are in the city, then your first job to prepping is to get out of the city. If you are relying on a balcony or a patio for food, you will starve. City prepping/ city survival during SHTF, not good. That’s truth Jo matter what this guy says.
“Whoa to those that build house upon house.”
City prepping for the end is not possible.
Help!! Im in area where it snows a bit in winter…
Any suggestions for outdoor growing. The season is short here also.
Thanks Kris. Appreciate this series.
