In this video, I share what I think is the best orange tree for northern growers to grow citrus. If you are interested in growing citrus, but you have a shorter growing season and your short warm season struggles to ripen citrus, this citrus variety may be the solution…and it’s absolutely delicious!

The Brown Select satsuma mandarin orange (also called Brown’s Select) is one of the most cold hardy citrus varieties, it produces top quality fruits with few to no seeds, and is one of the best tasting citrus varieties I’ve ever tasted. It’s very early ripening and ripens about 3 weeks ahead of Owari and months ahead of navel oranges and blood oranges. It can ripen its crop before the hard freezes start in many climates.

  2. What a wonderful treat, especially since it's in your own backyard!!! Thank for sharing all your garden experiments. 😊 It's what makes your channel fun to watch💞

  3. We bought clearance citrus trees this year! One in the late spring from tractor supply for about $3. A meyer lemon. Then this fall walmart had various citrus trees for $24.95. I waited and waited and finally after our first frost in mid October they marked them all down to $12.95, then $6.95. I got 6 😅. 2 lime trees, 2 calamondin orange trees, 1 navel orange, and 1 more meyer lemon. I'm in 7b foothills, so I've brought them all indoors to my south window with grow light to over winter. They are putting on new growth and I even see a blossom forming on one. Look forward to watching all of your citrus videos for grow tips 👍

  4. Thank you for this information. I have wanted to try citrus fruit and I am in 7b. I do not have a place to bring them inside as I have only one window facing south and the rest just do not get enough daylight.

  5. In zone 7a south jersey. I am building a 12x40x10 greenhouse unheated in hopes of growing citrus. Already have flying dragon outside. I ordered yuzu and another for the greenhouse.

  6. Also in my other harbor freight greenhouse have a meyer lemon in ground with incondecent lights. Will see how it fairs. Did survive 19F thus far.

  7. Awww, I WISH I could import citrus trees into California, since the 'citrus greening' disease has hit, no imports allowed. I'm not sure about other states. I think I'll call Menlo Growers in Gilroy, CA and see if they can stock that variety.

  8. Great video! You said something about cross pollination. Would one be able to bring the orange plant inside while whe flower is starting and take it back outside, with the intention of makeing seedless oranges? I don't want to make a assumption about how that works.
