when planning a garden consider your goals. What do you want to eat fresh, what do you want to preserve, do you know how much to plant, how many seeds you’ll need, and where to plant? I take this into consideration as well as crop rotation and companion planting when planning my garden.
I know spreadsheets aren’t for everyone, so use what works for you this is more about the thought process that goes into planning a successful harvest.
I am still learning and growing every year as a Gardener. I hope you enjoy this series.

  1. Wow I love it I just started this year doing a little planning with a calendar never thought of a spreadsheet like this now you got my brain cells spinning 😂 lol

  2. Awesome! Thanks for sharing your journal. I still don't know how much I need to grow to preserve what I want since I'm still starting out on the preserving front. I've always just grown for fresh eating. This year will be the first time that I write things down and weigh the harvests and figure out how much I need to grow.

  3. I'm always impressed with people who have such detailed plans. I more just visualize in my head and then plant.

  4. My unorganized and spontaneous brain needs this so much!! Thank YOU for sharing! This is going to be so helpful to us. -Jenn

  5. This was great! Shows the importance of planning ahead and looking back. Sometimes people think a garden is simply something you can just do haphazardly . . . and then they wonder why they aren't reaping the results they envisioned. I'm more of a notebook person for keeping records of things, but I can certainly see the benefits of the spread sheet. Looking forward to the next videos in this series!! Thank you so much!

  6. I absolutely love this!! This will be my 2nd year gardening and last year I didnt plan I just planted what I could find starts for. This is my first year actually planning and starting from seed. I am lost when I look at my 75×35 plot! I know what I want to plant but actually planning where everything will go is what is stumping me. This helped me quite a bit. Thanks and happy homesteading!! ~Shaina~

  7. Rachel, I think this will definitely be helpful to novice gardeners because you touched on several points that some people may not think about. Keeps track of when you don't plant enough but also when you plant too much. Excellent 👍

  8. I admire you for being such a good planner & organizer. But looking at those spreadsheets just gets my brain all combobulated!! Lol! But good for you & i know you put in alot of time doing them.

  9. WOOOHOO I'm not alone! My husband teases me because of my Excel "garden schematic" but at the end of the day, there's less waste (of produce, resources, and time). Great video! Good luck on your garden and God bless.

  10. That's definitely some good things to think about. Goals for the garden is probably something to keep in mind right at the beginning. 👍

  11. This was a wonderful plan, thanks so much for sharing. I never planned, I just plant, but its only me.

  12. Really interesting, I am in the process of planning a market style garden 50ft x 200ft…. need all the help I can get.
