When you said you pulled that out, the name of the sweet potato vine, I pictured a file cabinet in your brain and a sheet of paper with the name on it floating out of the file cabinet. I know weird but I thought it was funny. Maybe too much Harry Potter on the brain for me. 🍁🍂🍁🦃💚🙃
Several years ago we had some trees removed. One tree was an ancient southern pine. Under that tree there was a hill of pine straw and other leaves that had accumulated over many years.
After they removed the tree I asked them to leave the stump and the hill of accumulated compost. I planted A garden on the hill which does great but I have to water it way more than the rest of the yard because the soil is so light.
What would you recommend I add to this to make it hold water better. I've added soil but it has not made much of a difference. The tree was removed in 2016 so there's been a lot of breakdown of the original material.
I have a resident groundhog living on our property, I hope to live trap him next spring and give him a new home. Anyway I was pulling into my driveway, it’s kinda a longer driveway I see this groundhog running pell mell down the driveway trying to get away from me, running as fast as he can His butt and backside just scooting it was a very cute and funny site. He has to go though, he likes to nibble on my garden in the spring nipping the new shoots of plants/ vegetables as they start coming out of the ground. He is by no means a little groundhog so he has to eat a lot. He is beautiful but he has to go 🍁🍂🍁🦃💚🙃
I just planted a sunshine ligustrum about three weeks ago maybe a bit less so I continue to water it unless we've had recent rain. We've had some good rain lately but it was very dry this summer and the soil was dry a foot down where I planted it so I am babying it until we get a hard freeze and I know its not putting out roots or anything. I got this plant on your recommendation. Its beautiful. Thank you. I planted it in front of a rose bush that has dark green foliage and it pops!
We had an extremely dry fall, but finally got some rain before the snow showed up, I was thinking that I would have to go and do some watering so the gardens would make it through the winter. We also had an extremely dry summer, but I’m getting use to that, fall we usually get a ton of rain before it starts snowing, I believe that weather patterns are really starting to change. Maybe 15 or 20 years ago we had nice gentle rain through the summer months, little to no watering needed, but now we’re almost bone dry through the summer, ground cracking dry, and by fall we get the replenishing rain, not so this year, we did get enough to sustain the plants in the gardens but nothing like we usually get. 🍁🍂🍁🦃💚🙃
I had a birch tree cut down and I asked them to leave the wood chips for me and the company refused because they sell my wood chips. What’s your opinion on that answer? I thought I was doing them a favor to not have to haul it away . I am disappointed in the company but I didn’t want to write a bad review because I do support small businesses
Never ever would have thought about the soil being affected by winter too! Duh me! Good education here as usual…..Thank you Jim, another goodie!
Maybe a stupid question? Can I use pine cat litter in my garden? I’m not exactly sure if I can toss it in the garden or if will hurt my plants. If I can put it in my garden I would put it in an area that I wouldn’t soon be planting. 🍁🍂🍁🦃💚🙃
Hi Jim, I have 3 sky pencil hollies here in Zone 5b and do nothing to protect them. It has been three years and they have been fine so far. 🤩🌲🪴🌳
Great Q&A and thank you Jim for this wonderful series 🥰
My grandmother use to put her coffee grounds in her flower bed and that was one of the best soils that I have ever seen. It impressed me and I was a kid. 🍁🍂🍁🦃💚🙃
When Annual bulbs that are finished for the year can you just leave them in the ground or do you have to dig them out.?
🙋
I was excited to find a quart size Pieces glauca "obovata" at Home Depot this week. It almost made up for them not having any soil conditioner/ nature's helper 😡 Will probably have to buy it at an outrageous price at Pike's. Aren't you glad you got out of retail? After making hundreds of cut green wreaths I swore I'd never make another but I do make small arrangements in wet foam for friends. Do miss having an enclosed space to do this in though. Hoping weather cooperates to get them done! It's been frisky puppy weather in Georgia for sure 😊 even for the long past puppy dogs.
Edit: "Conica" not obovata. My brain file cabinet needs straightening out 😂
Regarding frost/freezes, is it true that the ground itself never freezes in NC? Someone at a garden nursery once told me that. Very interesting question about root washing.
Hi Jim, you planted an Olive Martini Elaeagnus in your old house. I wanted a fast growing shrub for screening but I read it can be invasive. What is your take on it?
Your animated delivery is great! I was wondering about the two hardwood mulch piles I have, left a couple years ago by tree cutters who needed a spot to dump. They are not under a walnut tree, but are somewhat close; close enough that some nuts fall there-(or maybe the squirrels who plant them in my containers plant them there too). Can I use the mulch in my garden or flowerbeds? Also, how close could I plant other trees near a walnut tree?
Fahrenheit is the superior system for weather. 100 degrees in Fahrenheit is HOT, and it sounds hot. “Wow, it’s over a hundred today!” The Celsius equivalent is… 37. “I’m dying, it must be at least 37!” Underwhelming.
Question: I fall planted a big foot Cleyera with some tender growth. I knew it might get zapped and it did. Do I leave it on the plant until the early spring pruning?
🍁🌳🍂THANKS AGAIN ‼️🍂
Came for the lorapetalum, stayed for the meteorology lesson. Good questions this week!
If your travels bring you to New Jersey a.k.a. The Garden State we would love to have you. Rutgers garden center in Ringoes is a great place.
Zone 5B Southwest/SouthCentral PA here. Is there any type of pruning that I should be doing? I have woody shrubs/bushes, trees , butterfly bush and big leaf hydrangea. Thanks!
Good morning Jim! You talked a lot about blueberries being tough, cold hardy plants. I’m in zone 8a and want to plant blueberries. My question is do they need a reprieve from the sun (plant in part shade) and is there a specific variety that does better in the south? I’ve heard that they do well on the north side of a structure in warmer, humid areas. Thanks for your wonderful, informative videos!! Happy thanksgiving!
