Can overwatering kill your plants? Keeping the plants in the home garden healthy could be overwhelming for many plant parents. In this video, a GadgetFreeHour special by ParentCircle, Sangita Wahi Mohin, who spreads awareness about organic farming, answers your concerns.

When watering our plants, Sangita says, we need to be careful, as it’s one of the most common gardening mistakes beginners make.

Water requirements of different plants will be different, but the general rule is that whenever you water a plant, water it deep, which means, water it slowly till the time it’s going out
of the pot. The frequency of watering must be reduced for certain plants but not the amount of water they need. Test the soil for water requirements by putting your finger two inches deep in the soil—if the soil still has moisture, you don’t need to water it. Your plants won’t die if you don’t water them for a day or two. But overwatering could kill the roots. Root growth is better when you don’t water your plants too frequently.

Sangita suggests organic and easily available sprays for better growth of plants. She says, “Diluted buttermilk is a good spray for plants. You can use it once a month.”

Apart from that, Sangita says bio-enzyme sprays also work wonders for plants. Onion peel, potato peel, and banana peels can be used in sprays for better plant growth.

For pest management, you can do a preventive neem spray once a month during monsoons when the chances of pests are more.

How to recognize if plants in our home garden are ailing and need some attention? Sangita says parents can always make out if their baby is not doing well, the same is true for plant parents. “You need to observe your plants closely. You could spot different types of pests if
you observe them once in 2–3 days. A neem spray can solve most of the problems,”
she says.

Maintenance of indoor plants

Sangita says nature never designed plants to be kept indoors for decoration. Even if you are keeping indoor plants, ensure that those are taken outdoors at least once a fortnight and are
not kept in dark, dingy corners. Indoor plants should be in well-ventilated rooms. Be cautious about watering indoor plants, as the temperature inside is controlled. Do not place indoor plants near direct air vents like AC ducts and fans.
