While I was in New Jersey in the summer, my friend gave me a backyard garden tour. Have a look at what kinds of fruits and vegetables you can grow even without a lot of sun. With a lot of deer and racoons in the area, he has to fence in his garden.
In addition to the garden he has a huge hot compost pile that he gets mulch from along with a lot of worms. Next to the composting pile is his goldfish pond. See the clever way he gets food for his goldfish.

Good for your friend. I live in a farming community and it's amazing how growing your own things saves in the long run. It's a lot of work but it pays- financially and nutritionally.
