We finally arrive into the Sea of Cortez after 2,000+ miles of sailing desperate to be back into the swing of cruising; our expectations couldn’t be higher after months of dreaming. We arrive at 6am after a 3.5 day offshore passage from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We crash for a few hours, wake up around noon and by 2pm are out exploring. While Grace is snorkeling around, the sky darkens quickly and all of a sudden a massive storm is on us. We race back to the boat in our dinghy in steep, choppy seas and finally arrive to Calico Skies relieved that she hasn’t dragged. The chart plotter recorded over 30 knots of wind and complete shift in wind direction in the short time we were gone.
Things are off to a rocky start but an evening hike reveals a spectacular view from a nearby cliff overlooking our anchorage. Turquoise water meets red cliff and it is absolutely stunning.
The next day we head to the beach with our friends and enjoy the clear water and beautiful sandy shore. It’s definitely starting to feel like the paradise we imaged. We decide to head out for our first free dive in the Sea’s waters and are stunned to find a massive amount and variety of fish. Then something magical happens: I am shocked to see a large octopus slowly emerging from a rock, perfectly camouflaged and beautiful. I a full spend 5 minutes watching him swim from rock to rock and time stands still.
Meanwhile, our friend Gary of sv OneLife is out already and has speared a snapper. Bill is on the hunt and soon spears a perfect sized Grouper!
We decide that between the two of us we’ve caught enough fish to feed our whole friend group for dinner so we plan to have everyone aboard sv Delos & sv OneLife over to Calico Skies to eat. But as we’re arriving back to our boat we see a swarm of Bees buzzing around and discover a large group hovering over our cockpit. They’re also down below and we’re surprised to see them so early in our cruising season. We’d heard rumors that they could be a problem but we’d hoped not to deal with so soon.
Later, the sunset is stunning and the company even better aboard Calico Skies. We sample the Grouper and the Dog Snapper Gary caught and they are delicious. Watching the moonrise in our quiet, peaceful anchorage is a night to remember.
The next morning we make a team effort to locate 2 items that have gone overboard in the short time we’ve been here: The knife that Bill threw overboard when he cut himself fileting fish yesterday and a dive weight. We marked the spots on Navionics but we’ve swung 175 degrees overnight so it will be a challenge, especially with the bottom covered in fuzzy grass. I jump in and am able to locate the knife without too much difficulty, closely followed by the dive weight. Its been a bumpy couple of first days in the Sea of Cortez but we’re excited to see what the future of our cruising season holds here!

Great video….but that dive footage, man that was spectacular!!! Thanks for bringing us along in the adventure!!! Fair winds and seas ⛵️
Yet again guy's another awesome video, take care and have fun 👍
Do you have to worry about Sharks.😟
If you pot a dish of water out on the deck with a cloth in it the bees will drink from it and the cloth will let them climb out so he dish isn’t a bee drowning device.
Is there anything on that boat that isn’t broken or jury-rigged with paracord or duct tape?
Amazing place, thank you for showing me this part of the world . Those big boulders ,perhaps a earth quake many years ago .
Yes. being brave doesn’t take away the pain on the finger . I’m glad you guys are with friends, imagine being out there alone . The weather changed quickly , a scary place to hang out . Perhaps Those bees are the rulers of the land . A nice place to visit but , can’t leave fast enough . You can loose a anchor in those boulders 🪨 sketchy. Have fun captain
Congratulations on finding the knife and dive weight
The knife wasn’t the ones every YouTube channel is hawking. What gives? Nice video though.
That's a stunning, unique environment. It's so interesting how the ocean color can look so very different in different parts of the world. The desert contrast really does make it pop. -Larry
This episode is packed with action… Seeing an octopus, the moray eel, bee invasion, finger injury, fish dinner with friends, and getting mellow on margaritas with an amazing peaceful sunset. This has to be in the running for a top five favorite destination. I'm so jealous!
Thanks!
great underwater shots,
It is great to see that you are traveling as a group, social and practical, fun too, a really interesting and pleasant episode to see, just that bit extra special, for knowing you are not alone, to hear Siera in the background, plus your friends, enough to warm the coldest of hearts. Take care good people…Paul.
Such a good video guys! And a great place to explore . I hope you rent a jeep or van and do some touring around south of la paz . The best shrimp civichie on earth in las barrelies . Fyi i probably didnt spell that right lol
Also right in the middle of the dessert there is a nice little water fall and cabo pumlo has to be in your dive plans stunning amount of live . A truly amazing place .
Great video! Thanks!
What a lovely friendly video. I really like watching your underwater filming, so much aquatic life to see. That Grouper must have tasted good, nothing like fresh fish. Wished I was there with you guy's.
Awww the sea of Cortez…how magical. Amazing photography as usual Grace… cheers
Great video, isn't it funny how the sponsor of this video is komikoto knifes and then Bill threw a knife overboard🤣🔪⛵
Accidentally dropping the knife 100ft away from the boat after cutting your finger 🤣 that's like my phone falling horizontally against the wall every time my ex wife calls, fair winds ⛵️
MMMMMMMMM Tasty!
LOL – Bill still hiking in flip flops?? I hear you Grace – I originally thought the area around the Sea of Cortez would be too brown and dry – not really interesting. Boy, was I wrong. What an amazing adventure so far. Thanks for sharing!!
Another beautiful episode! The underwater shots are extra beautiful since the water is so clear…..or maybe Grace is just a great photographer and editor!
Thank you – this is a great video. Growing up in AZ, desert scenery is my kind of scenery and it's beautiful when it meets the water. Going to have to schedule a trip.
Appreciate the length of time u give us to view marine life or the gorgeous views around u. ❤️🇨🇦
Your pictures and descriptive words make me want to find peace and beauty in the Sea of Cortez …Just stunning. Looked like it could be stinging too but the bees didn't seem angry not hear your ouches and oooos.. You can dive so deep.. I have trouble at the bottom of a 7' deep swimming pool.. You all go twice or three times as deep as that. Good for you. !!
I was just thinking to myself, what's that in the ocean and it was your spear gun lol. What a great dive indeed. Such beautiful scenery, amazing. Great times. Love the vlog 🙂
Great episode! Loved every minute.
Great underwater video. I’m amazed at how smooth your video looks while just snorkeling. It seems as though you had a tank on and went much deeper.
While looking toward the shore I heard Grace yell "High Sierra!" . Well I'm sorry to inform you that those are just hills near the water. The High Sierras are very big mountains pretty far inland. : – )
i just got back from cabo on friday. i really enjoyed all you underwater footage. i cant beleive how long you stay under
the octopus 'episode' was captivating
Absolutely gorgeous sky colors! …8:19… Reminded be of the 90's, when I was living on Mars! Minus the H2o of course!! 😉 As always thanx for sharing <3
Beautiful
Delightful. Thank you for another great video.
Thank you so much for the underwater footage.
You have a gift for capturing and sharing the beauty of nature! And that grouper! Yum!
Fantastic scenery and well filmed thanks for your efforts to make a great channel 🖖🖖👍🇿🇦
