Nice Garden. I too am learning how to urban raise bed garden. 1 thing i found is the bark in the mulch hinders growth, either replace with straw or move away from base of plants.
Love this!
We can plant the seeds & tend to the garden but it is the Almighty who makes the garden grow! Praise Yah!
I really enjoy witnessing your new passion. Could you do something like gardening for dummies? Beacuse I don't know what hand pollination is or that there is a difference between female and male flowers/blooms. Something like "what I've learned so far".β¨π
Is there a video showing what all you put in your raised beds? Like what kind of soil, compost, and did you use a filler. I am enjoying the gardening videos.
I commented on another video and thought you were in NC. It will be just a day trip to your family here.
Yes PLEASE do a gardening for dummies! Not beginners, I know literally nothing. I know you're supposed to water plants, that's it. π€£
I would really love to have a small garden someday. Just a few things that could come from home would be really nice.
Two things- I am loving the garden tour! You have always had a Jess vibe, and I can really see you blooming in this area of YouTube. The other thing I wanted to mention is that I am currently reading your sister's book, and she writes so sweetly/ highly of you! I love that!
This is what dreams are made of!
One day we will no longer in active military and we will stay in one place long enough to grow lots of veggies!
Your home is my dream.
To own a home like yours hear youd have tk be a millionaire multiple probably.
So thanks for sharing π love your videos.
Your garden looks so nice!
I found you through your minimalism content because I was also at that point in my life, and also discovered the joy of gardening this season! I am loving these videos.
Loved this video!
I am loving these gardening videos so much! I've been gardening a little for the last 10 years but I found the Roots & Refuge channel this year too and Jess really inspired me, I have a small urban yard but I converted my whole front yard into raised beds! I've found that transplanting works better for me, I can transplant when the seedlings are a little more mature and not as vulnerable to weather & pests.
You do have green fingers Ashleigh, X
As for direct sowing: I used to work at an 1850βs farm museum and we direct sowed everything outside although some in different ways. Tomatoes got down in βseed bedsβ then transplanted and deep planted when they got bigger. Just about everything else we just direct sowed and thinned. Some things really need direct sowing to thrive such as cucumbers, melons, and squash. Beans and peas do great direct sown. And turnips will practically grow like weeds direct sown. We did direct sow cabbages and the only real issue we had (besides cabbage moths) was sheep getting into the garden and eating them.
I think it depends on where you are, timing, and pest pressure. If the seedlings are eaten before they have a chance, it is better to start them indoors. I would do better if I started indoors due to growing season, but I live in northern Indiana.
Would you consider getting honey bees? where I live if you are willing to host them the university comes and takes care of the them for you.
Congratulations and welcome to the world of gardening! I garden in a zone 3 π¨π¦ garden, and usually canβt safely plant until after the May long weekend, so we usually have to start our seeds indoors. Iβm excited to follow along with your gardening experiences. Remember, nothing in nature is static – enjoy the constant changes and growth. π±π±ππ»πβοΈ
I have been watching you for years. This is my first comment. I love roots and refuge as well and am glad to see you have discovered her. You might also like the following two channels https://youtu.be/0LQRZvt72_s and

Definitely would love the gardening for dummies video! We are hoping to build some raised beds for onions, garlic, bell peppers, and tomatoes and I just feel so unsure of where to start!
Beautiful πΏ
Your garden is gorgeous! I love the watermelon!!! I'd love to grow some next year π
No deer in the neighborhood? Your fence does not look like it would keep critters out. I have a tall fence, but my solar entry gate got off kilter and was open about 8 inches one whole day before I found out. That was enough room for one deer to skinny in and enjoy fine dining. I lost all my tomatoes, zukes, cucumbers, nasturtiums, beans, and kale, plus begonias in one night. Expensive learning curve from a fellow rookie! Good luck to you!
Definitely grow potatoes! Iβm in Denmark and have only a balcony container for planting but harvested so many potatoes just by experimenting for the first time this summer. And our summer is barely two months. So worth it and easy ππ»
Love this video! I'm also a first time gardener in zone 8a (North Texas). We've planted a lot of the same things and it fun to see what's worked out. My watermelons didn't do much. Wondering if it's because I tried to trellis them? Hardest part has been keeping critters and bugs off of everything! Best of luck, it looks great. Looking forward to learning more.
My baby tore out my…..my heart! My youngest like like to pick "flowers" for me. My radishes, carrots and beets have suffered great losses. But he laughs when I "sneeze", so I suppose he can just go ahead and pull them all. Hopefully it'll keep him away from the rest of the veggies…
Hi Ashleigh, I've come to your channel by way of Angela's and I had one question for you if you would…it's in regards to "unschooling"….this so upsets me for your children. Are you choosing no curriculum for all of your 7 kiddos? Your beautiful children deserve a future that's the best we can give to our children. Clearly, Angela is a stellar homeschooler, so I'm sure she'd offer her curriculums for your babies; please consider, and prepare them their way. It's their right Ashleigh. God bless.
Can u do a how to video on you garden bed building when you go to build more beds!?
You have strong self-control! I harvested a sugar baby with half-green, half-brown tendril because Iβm so impatient. It wasnβt ripe although the center have pinkish flesh. I was so mad that I made myself eat the pink part before tossing it in the compost. I have 9 more harvest which I will wait for the right time. Thanks for this great video! First time gardener n.cali zone 10a
Canning tomato-bases sauces is a lot of hassle. They take a long time to peel, remove seeds, reduce/ evaporate. We did that for years and it was a whole family affair. We now focus on more starchy stuff – cabbage for sourkrautt, potatoes, green beans, califlower and cucumbers for pickles.
My Mom has a garden in the summer but not very big since we have a small yard. I had her grow those hot chilli peppers where if you eat one your mouth is burning for 15 minutes. I love those! She likes growing other vegetables too.
Watching this super late but yay Im so glad you got into gardening!! I'm so proud of you! This is an epic first garden, I cant wait to see next yearsβ€
I was raised in walterboro Sc so I understand what you mean by itβs hotπ, Shalom
