A few months ago we got our tractor stuck in the creek bank on our property. It’s a tiny creek, but mucky enough that our front end just sank. We recently had some stone delivered and we’re going to move it to the creek and see if we can’t shore up the bank so that we can cross with a tractor.

Lol great timing I am doing this same thing today, I have a 12' piece of culvert pipe and a big pile of fill dirt.
Remove four to six inches of the muck in the road bed you're going to be driving on. Replace it with 53's (pack rock is what we call it locally. #5's mixed with fines-the dust from crushing). Pack that by driving over it. When it settles and dries its almost as hard as concrete. Then cover it with #2's, 5,s, whatever. You'll never sink down. Did it in my driveway for the huge garbage disposal truck to reach my dumpster. Its been there for 15 years used weekly through all kinds of hard freezing and thawing. No sign of any wheel ruts since.
Could have had it dumped in the next county too!
Put in a culvert pipe or two
Pipe then flagstone hump it up and pack it a bit then add you limestone not gravel gravel will not pack and stay it is too round you need driveway limestone for the top or it will keep disappearing on you if you like #2 gravel ask for #57 driveway limestone it is very similar with better shape for compaction.
This 'creek' might be part of the county drain system. You should check with the county drain commissioner before filling that creek bottom. Plus, AEP gives away used power poles and they make great bridge material. I would get free power poles from AEP and build a bridge.
You might put in a covert pipe and put some #2 underneath the pipe take out the soil on both sides to get to the clay or hard pan then put the #2 pads on both side. Thats should be good.
We used a couple of loads of 1's and 2's first until they wouldn't sink and made a hard base. Then 3's and 4's for filling in, used it for a year to settle while using, then 57's next year. it's held up for over 20 years, only had to top coat it once again in all that time with yearly heavy spring run off.
I’ve built several over the years on my farm….. build a low water crossing or Ford as they called it in horse and buggy days. Use Rip/Rap size stone 8”-12” size stone and push into the ditch and across. And them barely fill over that with the stone that you did buy. The idea is not to hold the water but to put a hard bottom in the stream bed that will support your tractors and equipment for crossing. Google low water crossings. With this you will never have to work about a damned up or stopped up culvert. If you do install a culvert make damned sure it’s big enough. From the looks of it I would install a 36” diameter metal culvert and ramp up and over the pipe. One this large will never damn up and the water wouldn’t wash out dirt by being able to breach over the top and wash it out. Good luck!
I would delete this video asap. If EPA sees this they will freak out. Don’t mess with creeks or natural waterways. They don’t play around. Big fines. Good luck and don’t post anymore about the creek. Just my advice. Check out Street Speed 717 on YouTube. He paid 50,000 fine for driving a pickup in a creek.
I highly recommend you install a culvert along the stream line. Eventually the silt in the creak WILL clog. Trust me.
Oh, you just said the magic word.
You can put a 18” or 24” culver corrugated steel or concrete. Put about 6” of your #2 aggregate after you dig up about 8.” Deep to make room for the aggregate and pipe thickness. Match the slope of the stream. Then pour the rest as you planned to. Just check pipe rating for load and hope you can avoid the added expense of a structure to protect the culvert. Personally, I build a wood bridge using treated lumber.
Oh, another note
Make sure you’re not violating some kind of Environmental law in your area. Fines are huge.If you ignore and get into trouble make video of that. 😂
Put in a culvert. Rock will get plugged by leaves and create a dam. Junk logs forming a culvert will last for ten years, more with a foot + of rock over them.
crossing muck = $$$
road fabric from solid ground to solid ground,
load of brick brack for the creek area,
the stone you already on top of the bigger stone from solid ground to solid ground
another layer of road fabric
then dirt or crusher run on top.
Geotextile down first and then the rock would help it not sink into the mud.
Still need a culvert Cortney
I like that trailer.
Would have had a better chance if you put geotextile fabric down then the stone down over that. I do agree that just solidifying the bottom would be nicer than putting in a culvert.
Experience is gained by failing, yet continuing. Paraphrasing a quote by someone much wiser than me. 👍 Always useful content, Courtney, thanks
So basically u were trying to build a "Texas crossing". 1st off this should have been during summer when things were at their driest. Small excavator with wide bucket to pull sloppy material off down to base material. Then put rock in, but keep in mind that the creek will move silt material and fill in around rocks in bottom and sides of creek. A bridge structure most likely would have been best solution.
Love the load of #2 🤣🤣🤣
Culvert is really the only option. I cant figure out what your logic was on just the rock. You did a great job of showing off all your equipment you used to get it done…😂😂😂
I build bridges over creeks from time to time so i do have some experience here. Lots to consider obviously. Yes, you have some soft banks and that plays into how many tons of rock you want to put in there because it's gonna sink and sink and sink. I'd make a timber pad on each side and put in a culvert, then cover with rock. Should last a couple decades. 😎😎
Also – I wish i had a tiny portion of all the gadgets you have in regards to equipment
Put logs in mud to make hard road
You have to dig out the muck first put your culvert in, then rip rap then your #2
IM humble O that stone will work, just have to lay it on thicker and keep packing it. Hopefully your culvert won't plug up often. Sure looks like a fun project.
Careful, check with your DNR
I like that cart.
I have at least 80 tons of broken concrete size from 4”x8”x8” To 4”x2’x4’. Come and get it I can load you up with my tractor. You put it on as a base then cover it with your stone. Take S much s you want. Davisburg much.
