May I ask if you have ever canned or frozen tin peaches? Just we have heaps of number 10 cans and no where to store them? I am a big klutz so I understand the tripping and falling. Lol
Could Mice be eating Your seedlings?
Here in Victoria with the ever changing weather we are also having bug mania season, OMG all my beautiful seedlings that were just ready to plant now don't exist, eaten grrrrrrrr I completely understand your frustration. A friend said her peas etc have also been eaten they think there is a new type of mite or something, we will persist I say as the crow flies away with my orange in it's beak geez
Nysa, you are so cute⦠I love the way you ramble⦠thanks for showing us your home and family.. GOD BLESS
Have you trird diatomacious earth in case its an insect eating plants?
Feeling your frustrations! Iβm different state to you- country victoria but am also having a terrible time with seedlings. Earwigs have been a huge issues here.
Very good and educational video. even when you ramble I listen intently. I'm so sorry about your garden. I would be beyond frustrated…I would be pissed! LOL. I hope things get better. My heart always goes out to farmers of any kind because you have to rely on the elements good or bad. Hang in there! The ducklings and chicks are just tooooo cute!
When you are dealing with your incredibly bountiful garden harvest in the coming months; you will look back to this time of frustration, and exclaim…HAH! You didn't beat me down!!!!! I will be rooting for you all along the way.
Ramble away, I enjoy hearing what youβre up to. My hubby is having issues in our little suburban Sydney garden also, it has been so wet and we arenβt maintaining any warm temps here yet which is really unheard of for our area of Southwest Sydney.
Hi Nyss, random plant looks like a watermelon, dry the onion seeds and use them on top of your sour dough loaves. My garde is is pathetic with all the rain and weird weather down new south. Chicks and ducklings adorable. X
That seedling kind of looks like my button squash maybe?
Yes we sure have been having some different weather this go around..hope it all works out for you….tfs, looking forward to next instalment.
I hate that what ever is eating up your seedlings up would become food for something else. I need your gardening tips darn bugs! Chickens and your ducks seem to be coming along nice. Hang in there love, the madness will surely end soon.π
Hi Nyssa, sounds like possums are eating your seedings perhaps?
It sure is weird weather ATM… I was in bunnings today and took a photo of a spray that deters roly pollys ants etc I sent it to your fb messenger thought it might be worth a try π
Everything I've planted out in the last few weeks has been demolished by the slugs and snails. Also wondering how much food I'll actually grow this summer.
Hey there- Iβm on the GC- so, I have a collection of 3 litre milk bottles with the bottom cut off.. I use these for my seedlings once theyβre out of the greenhouse- and into their grow spot. I find they work great to keep the seedlings protected and warm to start off with. I put a stick in the ground first, milk bottle over it with the stick out the top with the bottle pushed into the soil a bit. The stick stops the bottle moving if it gets windy ππ»
Hey Nyssa! Sorry if this has been said already I've not got the time to read all other comments.. I feel it could be Earwigs eating off the stalks? I had this issue in Victoria from lots of straw and things nesting you don't see them in the day time but go out late at night or early morning and the whole seed beds could be crawling they munch everything!! I remember being so so sad lile you seem at my seedlings. Don't worry it isn't you!!
My seedlings are getting smashed as well, itβs so disheartening! I feel like this year is way worse than normal for pests, must be the weather. Mosquitoes are also awful down here in Victoria. Hopefully things improve everywhere soon β€
Oh nyssa I feel your pain, I lost all my sight in my right eye and Iβm forever walking into things my sight is terrible, keep going, youβll get there ππππ
Oh no, thatβs heart breaking. Donβt give up, youβll figure it out π
Hi Nyssa. I feel your pain with the garden. I ended up giving up with seedlings and have resorted to direct planting everything this year. Have planted capsicum 3 times so far and all my zucchini have died in the ground. Winter is hanging around for ages. I see the garlic has been a disappointment for you still. Just saw the couple you mentioned last time. I did not get mine in the ground in Autumn so have resorted to putting supermarket garlic in the fridge then planting. Worked a treat and has started coming up. Sounds like you are still getting cold enough nights to try it with this shopping trip. Could the budget stretch to adding a few heads of garlic for planting? Love the chicken pen idea. My local council will only allow us to have 5 backyard chickens and no rooster, but then again, I am in town not on acerage.
Central NSW here, I say chasing rabbits…. but chase those squirrels, we don't mind. Mosquitoes are the worst here atm that I've ever seen.
Sorry about your garden troubles. But if anyone can work thru it I know you can. I really enjoy these informative videos!
Where did you source the elderberry starters please?
I recently watched a video from the weather department that said our rainy weather is due to a 4Β° south easterly difference in the wind. Apparently it's picking up moisture from around Tasmania and dumping it all up the eastern seaboard. Nothing to do with La Nina, or any other usual weather or climate change, just the wind.
Guessing it might be a pumpkin..let's have a guessing comp!..regards
Thankyou for the garden tour and updates.. Great video.
I love watching your videos and especially love when you ramble and go off topic. Please show more of the wildlife as I like to hear the sounds and see the wildlife. Thanks. X
All that rain you all got thrashed with is causing major issues now huh? You will figure it all out. If you have to buy a couple flats of Tomato plants or whatever, I have seen tons of homesteaders result to this all over the world this year. I am a person of Faith, I think you are correct not to be Afraid of not having enough. You are so resourceful and prepared with lots of backup plans. But it is not end of world that is the issue, it is not religious in theory. It is exactly what happened to you, that many Farmers are experiencing. Keep teaching, you are good at this. I watch you because I am amazed how resilient and level headed you are. I suppose, you might be called to experiencing a deficit and finding a way to overcome it. One thing I know about God, even if you don't believe, is he always provides. In one way or another he provides. We don't have to agree how it is accomplished, but we love and support each other and motivate each other to get through. I love this Community you have established. It is so full of creative problem solvers. It is important that we build together for our simple every day future. Big hugs, you are Awesome
I vote pumpkin….we had the same color of hollyhocks but they were double ruffled mom would say. When our garden was finished dad would disc it and plant Vetch to grow until a couple of months before planting the new garden. He would disc the Vetch under a month or so before planting the new garden saying it would supply the soil with all the nitrogen it needed. We always had abundant garden but then the climate may have helped as well.
It's crazy to think your summer is December but December in Uk it's winter xx
I love finding out so much about Australia and how it differs from us(Virginia US). We are having cold nights and warm days which is rather confusing when you are getting dressed for the day. Do you use your chickens for eggs only or do you harvest them for meat?
Iβm a squirrel too and can relate!
Sorry about your plants – itβs so disappointing.
Youβve made so much progress with the chicken pens and I like the sound of the next phase. Guinea pigs! I love Guinea pigs. We had 2 and they were just the cutest and they poop a lot so that would be perfect for your gardens
I don't know if you all have cattle panels available down your way but here in the states we use these for trellising and you can put up a few and cover them as a temporary hoop house to protect your seedlings. Here is a video showing what I mean. They aren't terribly expensive new. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilosaVqiSlc
Your gardens are normally amazing. I'm always blown away by your tomato and zuchini harvests especially. I've been so encouraged by you to expand those two things this year. You're having such a rough start this year but it could still be a good year. Some years ,some things thrive while others fail ,then the next can be the opposite. I hope it turns the corner for you soon. Thank you for sharing while I breakfasted the kids, got myself ready and tidied the lounge room , it feels like a friend popped over for a chat and cuppa. π₯°π₯°
βWe donβt prep for if the shit hirs the fanβ ππππππ I needed that today LMAO
Admirable seed saving progress! I'm impressed! Also it was the optimistic part of the video π Onion seed sprouts are great on salads btw (in case you have too many seeds!)
Re: your financial conundrum, my advice is to try reaching for a lower bar. Do less this and next year. Try, as an exercise, an year with no bought inputs. You already have so much material and structures and seeds and drip lines. I think it would be healthy for your mind and body. You know my stance on inputs and I know your soil needs work but honestly you now have way larger perfect compost and soil beds than us.
Do less so in effect do more. Permaculture teaches us it's best to have a small thing working optimally than a massive thing not really working.
And another thing on the buy/grow dilemma. I don't know how things are over there but here, the cheap stuff is awful. It's usually very chemically laden, tastes not good, stores like shit, it's not healthy nor good eating. If we don't grow tomatoes we probably won't be eating any or we'll be sourcing from friends. I don't trust the big ag at all. So if you want to put price on the things you're growing, price them by the top shelf organic local farmer market fares! Add to that the immeasurable premium of the health benefits of growing the food that nourishes your family yourself. If you don't want to go into embodied energy or intent, then think of the microbiome on those foods – this is what you're made of, so it's the best possible food for you.

I've been thinking about some of your garden issues so I thought you may like to watch some of my go to you tubers when I need knowledge and experience from more exprienced gardeners. Of the many I subscribe the following two are my main:- Huw Richards – although he lives in Wales he has been gardening all his life. His family has two separate acreage gardens where he expriements with various methods. i.e. cover crops, soil biology improvements etc. Another is retired soldier living near Caboolture. His channel is (Self Sufficiet me) he has many interesting and informative how to i.e. 10 organic ways to control pests in the garden. I hope this is of help to you both. Cheers
you might find that mice have eaten some of the tomatoe plants
