So many questions get asked about this topic. What do I do with a woodchip garden? How do I add manure or compost? Put on top? Pull woodchips back? What about leaves?

I've been wondering what to do about this. Putting new leaves on top made sense from looking at what nature does. Are there situations where you don't want to put leaves? Can they smother out plants?
As I keep telling local farmers here in rural Thailand, "Nature has had millions of years to refine the process" so why try cutting corners using herbicides, pesticides and sacks of granular fertiliser?
You're making me really want to get a pickup truck.
Thats one lucky apiarists and you're lucky to have an apiary in your yard. When I put bees in my yard the increase in plant productivity was amazing! My neighbors noticed it as well.
Have you ever tried planting the jerusalim artichoke seeds? I saved the seeds from the flowers this year
Huge windstorm blew thousands of tree seed into the yard, along with leaves. I took the leaves into compost, but the seed pods are large and they may not do anything more than sprout, which I don't want.
Any ideas on what to do? I think they're maple, leaves are as big as my foot, and walking over the pods doesn't break the outer covering.
Snow yesterday on the lower mainland, so I now have buckets of green tomatoes for relish, or just cooking and freezing. Sad year for the heat loving plants.
Thank you for reminding me I need to enhance soil fertility all year. I keep forgetting it's needed.
Great video. I’m with you. I try to learn something new everyday…or at least a few times a week. Even though I am 65 I thinks it’s still very important to do so. Every time I watch you….I learn so many new things. My bees are going to be so happy next spring when I expand the forest garden they live in now. Because we live in bear country, it is inside a electric fence compound. But it’s going to be so beautiful in there. I see new things I want to do with every video of yours I watch. Thank you so much. 🇨🇦🐝
What percentage of your family’s diet do you aim to produce annually?
I appreciate this video. I was one of those that asked exactly this question awhile back.
Thank you! Perfect timing…was wondering whether to move wood chips before laying down leaves on my first year food forest.
I agree from what I have seen in my garden over the last 10 years layering leaves and wood chips works well. Glad to see the bees have a safe haven with you. Thanks for the info!
Plus, it wouldn't be in line with the whole concept of lazy gardening 🙂
Another awesome video from you! Thank You!
7:34 – cherry bushes???
About bees – you should talk to them and tell them what's going on, so they don't get upset with you 🙂
I find the sunchokes to have a smoky flavour – is it because mine are covered in wood chips, do you think? I'm still looking for a way to cook them – do you have a favourite recipe?
How much do you think the leaf piles are oxidizing back into CO2 and how much is remaining in the soil? Do you know how deep the soil has been amended under the piles? Thanks for the videos. Always great to see real experiences.
I very much appreciate hearing how you continue to amend the soil, Keith. I have come to the same conclusion of just adding more on top of the original woodchips and do it for the same reason as you: that is how it happens in nature.
Also interesting to see and hear about the bees. Our son is a beekeeper and keeps groups of hives on 9 or 10 different properties here in Prince Edward County. Many property owners love having the bees nearby and some say that it increases pollination. He says that bees have a range of up to 2 kilometres so hopefully there are no sprayed fields within that range of your property.
I do watch all of your videos and am just chiming in to say I appreciate you and your ethics. Thank you!
Dude, to your point about learning more before you do a video…I searched for chicken hatching vids, and the first 6 or so were "how to" videos, by zero experience hatchers !! Lol redic. As long as you don't have " how to" in the title, I think you'd be alright. I'd watch you just talking about what you're learning as you go. Also, ugh winter.
